Has anyone successfully managed to make their own exhaust? I need a new one on the Starlet, standard ones aren’t available any more & wouldn’t work anyway. It’s a basic system from 4 branch to back box, but with a tight(ish) axle bend. Thinking either using Jetex parts & cutting/bending/welding, or using something like a mk2 escort system as they’re readily available & have an axle bend as standard? Don’t really want to go under the axle as ground clearance isnt great

No need to use Jetex parts, buy cheap bends on ebay and weld them together.

Yeah I've made quite a complicated one. Have a look on the Jag thread linked in my sig. Just bought a bunch of mandrel bends and tubes, cut it up and stuck it together with the very-hot-glue-gun.
One thing I did right was fully welding it as I went along which meant any warping was accounted for already. One thing I didn't do so well was welding stainless with a MIG which I think caused the chromium to migrate away from the metal around the welds making it stop being stainless anymore...

i never thought about welding them as you go! DOH! thats a good tip.
stainless, i think unless its the highly polished stuff , just mig it and itll be ok, its not "that much" different to mild steal. If you hjave to cut it though it is. Using a grinder is ok, but like a makita chop saw itll melt and stick on the blade. My rally car has an exhaust made from Isuzu n75 bits we cut off at work, i found out the hard way.

I was going to go mild steel tbh, as my welding skillz are lacking at best & it's going to see very few miles, so should last a few years at least.

Yeah I've made quite a complicated one. Have a look on the Jag thread linked in my sig. Just bought a bunch of mandrel bends and tubes, cut it up and stuck it together with the very-hot-glue-gun. I've done this on a few of my cars (Volvo 740 diesel, Volvo 340 turbo), and pretty pleased with the outcome. I too just bought a bunch of tubing, bends and silencers and welded them together. I've got an old MIG set up for stainless, using stainless wire and argon gas, and it's OK - won't win any awards but it doesn't fall apart and seems as corrosion resistant as the rest of the (probably low grade) stainless... If anything, a car used infrequently will benefit more from stainless exhaust...

I built/adapted about half an exhaust - what made it much easier was asking the seller (on eBay: every exhaust part limited) very nicely to stretch one end of each section I bought from them. The result was each section slipped over the next meaning cuts didn’t have to be mm perfect and welding was a series of lap joints not butt welds which are easier. Cheers

I priced up a DIY system from MIJ in Birmingham (they sell parts on ebay)
I called to ask about collection and they offered to built it for approx £75 more than the parts cost
I called mid week so they were quiet, needless to say I let them !
