I have tried to paint a few things with this and i get a fairly orange pealy finish. The 2 cars i have to paint are solid colours, i have tried base coat and lacquer, but its not worked. I went to the local paint shop, and they have sold me chromec? paint i think its called. Its a 2k paint, sold the the hardener, the thinner too. That seems to be working out very well for me. no i am now wondering, why does the 2k paint work so well but the lacquer dosnt? Ive mixed the upol at 2:1 and used 2k universal thinner. It just seems strange that instantly I'm getting the results i want with the same gun, same pressure, same everything, just different paint.

Can't be that strange? It's a different paint so all else being equal it's obviously the paint itself which is the difference!
I'm a long way from a painting expert but how much thinners are you using? You can use 'no thinners' if the results aren't good. Try different amounts of thinners would be my guess.
Could always contact the paint manufacturer to ask for the proper settings!

Most of the HS clear-coats I've used are 2:1 + 10% but depending on surface area to cover and temperature I'll often do up to 30% as it seems to flow out better. Try adding 10% thinner to start with and see how it goes.

Agreed, if it's thick it will orange peel. Add some thinners to thin it down and it will flow a lot better. Sometimes a bit more air pressure can work as well, you have to experiment a little to get the best results from each type of paint.

right ok, the bit i had meant to ask but not very well is, 2k paint v lacquer, what is the difference in its make up? As in, are they totally different things and is that why the sudden change in my abilities?
I have worked out what a big part of it was, just didnt think at the time, i had closed the fan up to colour parts of the engine bay that i thought would be difficult, then i didnt put the fan to wide open, it was maybe a turn out more. This is more than likely my change, and thinking back now i remember doing it.
Either way, the mini looks good, I'm made up with that paint

HS is the same whether its colour or clearcoat. Different makes of paint will spray differently, all to do with the viscosity.
Some paints are a real PITA whereas others are a joy to use.

thanks! one last thing, the 2k thinner ive been using in the lacquer is just universal 2k thinner from ebay, is that likely to be wrong? I know the upol says to use a certain type, but this being universal?

You can buy top-gloss thinners that claims to be better quality. I don't know how you would define 'better quality' but why risk ruining lots of work and expensive materials to save a tenner on thinners? Especially when you're using it in the clear coat.

It ought to work, but you might get odd or inconsistent results - I know someone who ended up with a matt finish using gunwash instead of thinners because they were in a rush and "it's all the same". The first thing a paint supplier or manufacturer will ask when you have poor results is did you use the whole system? I don't paint often or well enough to build in another thing that could go wrong

i painted a mini van years ago in my mates body shop, he mixed all the left over 2k blue paint he had into a tin and set everything up for me to paint it. It came out really well to be fair. Then the roof of the van got damaged, so i repainted it at home and it all bubbled up. I couldnt figure out why and it was because i had used gun wash as i had no idea there was different thinners.
