Reduced tax / no tax puts older cars in an easily definable category. It will then be much easier for the powers that be to restrict the use of certain types of vehicle - something that has been muted in the past and will no doubt raise its head again.

Think about it - the aim is to get petrol / diesel cars off the road so why should the authorities give concessions to them without an ulterior motive?

Well we have free road tax for 40+ year old cars and have had for decades without any issues. So different taxing isn’t going to result directly in different usage rules.

I can’t see the government changing PLG r anything like that to a discount rate simply because there’s too many cars of that era on the road still and they aren’t seen as classic by the General population etc so it’s not going to fly in face of their green policies. They are more likely to run a scrappage scheme to get people in 20-40 year old cars into new ones.

I would have said that a cars age is easily definable, they have all the necessary info to group them like that now !, as akku says having a group for 20-40 is no different to having the 40 plus group we had for years. Do I think a 20-40 reduced tax group is liable to happen ? No..…. do I think the petition will succeed ... No, but if enough people sign it then it will be noticed and may help to take pressure off the 40+ group, certainly nothing to lose by signing it.

The thing with these petitions is that everyone seems to think if a petition gets 100,000 signatures then Parliament have to discuss it - they don't, it just has to be considered for discussion. 100,000 signatures out of a population of 60,000,000 or whatever it was at the last count isn't going to make any difference whatsoever.

And as Igor says above - any reduction in tax from one source has to be made up by taxing something else or cutting services.

The whole subject is repetitive and boring.
