i have just one question How can you spend that amount of money ? I sense a degree of artistic licence from the seller, I don't doubt there's receipts for £260k+ but that they're for the whole life of the car and not just the restoration/overhaul/upgrade works which is still a staggeringly large amount but more feasible...dealer services, tyres, couple of 'proper' resprays etc and it'll soon accumulate.

"Delivery at cost price"
I hope its not the same company that "cost" the restoration.

Odd thing to mention when other than the engine there isn't any information about the car in the advert.

Well, I couldn’t spend that much money on a car….. because I don’t have that much.
Not money well spent IMHO.
I’ve had a car for 36 years, in service and all the road for all but the first year and I don’t think I’ve even spent £20k on that (provided I leave the fuel out anyway!)

It doesn't look anything that special for that money. I wonder if its a money laundering / tax write off excercise for someone somewhere in the past. Its possible to spend a whole lot of money very quickly if you have it. I remember maybe 20 years ago guys in Muscle Car circles were remortgaging their ex-council house they had bought 10 years before for like £10k, getting £150K mortgage against it and spunking stupid money into pro street or pro touring type build cars. They at least looked like crazy money had gone into them. I took a car to a local body shop and asked for a quote, I was told - just for a respray - it was going to be "at least £15K probably more" and thats a straight solid car. When I started telling folk "you won't believe what X quoted me for a respray" I was told that was "reasonable, probably on the cheap side" by loads of people. So imagine you are a "top restoration shop" and you charge £80 per hour, or £100 even. Thats like 2000 hours for £200k. How many hours does it take to completely strip a car, repair, weld up, fabricate, make 3rd party panels fit, adapt stuff to fit a V8, etc, etc. paint it and put it all back together? I was in a place in Coventry picking up parts from a place who had a E Type Jag all in bits. I was told that the owner had "quarter of a million in work done and its nowhere near finished" - I bet they are more like £120 +VAT hourly. Doing any turnkey build is expensive.

Doing any turnkey build is expensive. I read in one of the hot rod mags a few years ago that Chip Foose (or maybe Boyd Coddington, I forget who, but the sentiment stuck in my brain) said their shop only charged $80 an hour for labor but a top end build can take them two or more years to complete. The costs really do add up quickly when you’re paying someone.

That probably explains why there are so many rat look and patina style cars about these days. I mean if you haven't got the talent/space/spare time to do a decent paint job yourself then that sort of figure looks totally out of reach for most of us.

That's 7k a year, give or take. On a Capri. Put that way it could just have a full main dealer service history.

Just look at the hours blackpopracing put into his mate’s car recently, over 1200 hours. Then bill that at a commercial garage rate and add the cost of the parts…

Just look at the hours blackpopracing put into his mate’s car recently, over 1200 hours. Then bill that at a commercial garage rate and add the cost of the parts… Absolutely. Sounds like a lot, but if you imagine 80/20 split labour/parts that's about 1,800 hrs (@ £120/hr) and £53k. What would a brand-new crate engine and transmission have cost? Could have been half the parts budget right there. But at the end all you get is a nice Capri, something you could have bought for about 10% of your budget...but who among us can honestly say that they haven't overspent on a project?

Well, thats exactly the oportunity here... Its up for a fraction of the stated build cost and probably up for less than it would cost to make it at home. I've over spend on projects, but not by enough to buy a nice house.
