I'm currently on the look out for a Mk3 Golf estate diesel. These are very thin on the ground to say how common and throw away they once were. I used to have an AAZ TDI which I loved and shouldn't have got rid of. Are then non turbo diesels much worse than the TDI? Can you do anything with them to get a bit more power out of them?

more likely to find a Mk4 and even then those are getting quite scarce.

An SDI? They are absolutely woeful. I had one intermittently as a works van and it was borderline dangerous unladen. Fortunately the survey equipment I used was light! With a long run up you could hit an indicated 82mph. It ran on fresh air, but I'd rather walk.

The non-turbo ones are astonishingly slow and not really any more economical.
They, and cars like them have become rare are they’ve all emigrated to Eastern Europe and West Africa as those guys know a solid workhorse when they see them.

Shoot an offer at the company with the 1500 quider. Couple of my mates have bought a few bits from then under under the listed price, they are tight on space. Days of anything cheap are long gone unfortunately so £1500 doesnt shock me, especially if its standard and not messed with. Nothing worse than messing around with a car with cut springs and washers for camber for the sake of saving a few hundred.
