Condition leather before or after painting

I'm doing these seats up and I am wondering if the leather should be conditioned before or after recolouring (in original colour). They're very dry. I was going to lightly sand them and fill any cracks if necessary. The dye / paint I'll be using is water based if that makes any difference

Yes I would give the a rub over to smooth the surface and strip back with cellulose thinner before the new application. I did some years back and it turned out great.
