I'm gutted, we were so close.   Got as far as the north circular and the car just died. managed to limp to the side of the road, got it going again, went 500 yards and died again. It was starting up ok, running fine up to 3000rpm then dieing and cming back to life a second later. Almost like it was hitting the rev limiter at 3000. I had a fiddle and a poke, couldnt fix so got the rac out, they couldnt fix it either so had to wait for a recovery. Finally got back to the yard in the curse word rain, unloaded it off the back of the lorry and it started up and ran fine  I think it was just tired and wanted a lift home. Anyway, good job i hadnt pulled the engine out of the volvo as i'm now using it. Looks like i missed a good night too gutted. |

Absolutely bizarre... I had almost exactly the same problem with the strada this evening... didn't get as far as the north circular though... it was weird.. felt like I was running out of fuel.. jerking like a mad man down the road... then cutting out.. managed to get it to a petrol station... filled up (thought it was out of petrol at this point) but still the same.. so I called the rac helped myself to a hot choccy, bought practical classics and sat there reading till he turned up..
Mine was caused by (the RAC man thinks) a split along the base of the inch thick rubber gasket in between the carb and engine.. the engine moves as it revs, causing the split to widen and let extra air in.. therefore leaning it out so much that the engine just dies..
So yeah.. I also got towed home by the RAC... not so far.. so just on the bar..
Also when I got it home.. I had to reverse it up the alleyway.. and it worked fine..

Goosegog thankyou for bringing your car along - my jaw dropped when it rolled in - first time i've ever seen one in the flesh. On another note your first pic is absolutely stunning.

Eventually got home from the Ace at 5 this morning  Driving through absolutely torrential rain along the north circular, just turned off up to the roundabout under the A1 (M1 was shut up to J2) And the Derby conked out (suspected knackered coil  ) To cut a long story short I got relayed back home to Northamptonshire but after sitting behind a lorry which had tipped onto its side blocking the whole M1 for at least three hours Wouldn't have missed it for the world though - great meeting all the fellow Retro-Riders - some familiar, some not so  & Well done to all those that won awards |

So thats at least 5 RR breakdowns on one night, Strange coincidence?
Or is it just because we all drive shonky old cars?
In the 8 years i've had my cortina its never once failed to get me home. I've had my citroen 4 months and its been on an rac truck twice. I was thinking of selling it last night but now its fixed i've changed my mind again ;D
Turns out the throttle position switch was getting hot and shorting out. Swapped it with the one on the volvo and now its all lovely again.

that would be the North circular bermuda triangle then , strange things happen around there,
glad all you guys got home safely sooner or later, wish I could have come but was checking the car over on Monday night ready to mot it on Tuesday only to discover the doseur (spl ) valve had dumped all the cars green blood over the front mats and neither the Camry or trajet are what I would call retro rides
