hi all
just wondered if anyone has come accross this. When i fill my coolant/expansion(on my audi 80 saloon 1984) tank it seems to be dry almost immediately after a decent run yet shows no signs of overheating. The previous owner says this was always the case and he had no problems just wondered if this was normal? sounds dodgy to me.
The hoses coming from the tank seem fine so i can only assume a leak in the rad but, as i say there appears to be no overheating problems even on a long run.
thanks
john

If there's still plenty of coolant in the system, but not enough to fill the expansion tank, I wouldn't have thought it'd be enough to cause overheating. But, looks like you're losing it from somewhere, and eventually you'll run out of water! ;D

Have you checked the coolant level by topping it up from the filling point on the engine itself, instead of just pouring it into the header tank? Just in case there's not enough in the block and it's just siphoning it all in from the header.... My dad's KV6 did this. Conclusion was that it was either a pin leak that was letting it into the combustion chamber and burning it off (but not in an OTT fashion), or at shutdown when the pressures dropped in the chambers coolant was seeping in, then being burnt off at startup. Or alternatively, a duff core plug that we couldn't see leaking. Like Harris says, it's going somewhere....... Just keep on top of it and you might get by though!

Empty a bottle of BARS LEAKS into the rad'. If the leaks is that minor it should seal it.

My old Golf used to do the same. The expansion tank was cracked, it would heat up, expand and chuck all the coolant out. If it's not that, change the cap the seals get old and brittle. My Golf did that too.

'Twas a dodgy rad when I had this trouble, leaking between the matrix part and the tank part which were parting company...
[Edit: Come to think of it I still have this trouble, I just haven't driven that particular Sierra for eighteen months!]

Do not put a barrs leak in it, it will only make matters worse.
Are there any bleed screws in the cooling system?
It might be worth getting it pressure tested.
