In my local today, one immaculate Y-reg Polo breadvan. 23k on it, original dealer plates and stickers. Never had a radio fitted. Mudflaps not hiding rust or anything. Full Service History too. Perfect timewarp condition but it won't go back out through the gates until it's cubed. Some days I despair of humanity and right now I want to cry. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)

This sort of thing crops up all the time. I honestly think that if you applied for a V5 for these cars you would probably get one, but no-one ever finds out as no-one ever dares let anyone buy these things - sell it for £100 and risk getting in the sh*t or cube it for £80. I think it came about as people were getting fines, tax demands etc. for cars they thought they`d scrapped, so it became desirable to get a certificate of destruction, then progressed to being the norm.
It`s a shame as the yellow slip would absolve the owner from any arising issues while giving the scrap dealer a chance to sell the car if its too good to scrap, but it just doesnt seem to happen like that.
So far this year I have lost out on a 1988 Escort Ghia with 38,000 miles and very tidy, and a rock-solid Sierra Sapphire that could have at the very least made a decent Cossie Shell because of this proceedure.

The worst thing is I'm in all the time, that the scrappy owner knows exactly where I live and my neighbour - who I always go in with these days - does work for him regularly! I could apply for a V5 and turn up brandishing it but there seems little point. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

As Vic said, the high value of scrap means that the scrappie can make as much money cubing the car as selling it. All the scrappies ive tried to buy cars from wont because of the aggro they seem to get with the buyer coming back and complaining about it. Sometimes the person who had the car scrapped to start with sees the car back on the road and gets angry.

Lol, many times that happened to my dad. Scrapped an Austin 1300 Auto cos the 'box was knackered, saw it a week later, scrapyard had dropped a manual in, and sold it on!!

Certificate of Destruction from an ELV centre (or scrapyard.....) not reversable. Mind you, once they have certified destruction, you wont get the car out of them, its more than their licence is worth. Literally. If the keeper just sent the book off as scrapped, then sold the car whole (as parts, for example) you can apply for a logbook, and subject to dvla checking the chassis number, get one. The only escape for scapyard cars is IF the person scrapping it is prepared to part with the whole logbook (minus the yellow bit, as vic said) or the scrapman is prepared to put the car in his name so he can sell it on. Rare, but not impossible, thats how I got Jade's Polo. The previous keeper on the logbook is the scrapyard over from my unit, they owned the car for 1 day. Special case, maybe, cos Kev knew I was looking for a small car, and the woman disposing of the polo was happy for it to live on. Same guy wouldnt sell me a mk1 fiesta recently because the owner said it had to be scrap.

Yup, any business selling a car is liable for it to be roadworthy under law, and is legally obliged to offer a 3 month parts and labour warranty. By virtue of it being in the scrap yard in the firstplace suggests its not 100%.... As siad, price of steel means its nto worth the hassle to them. Simple economics and the bite back of consumer protection legislation.
I know people in the trade who have saved cars from scrappies and some yards still happily sell them on if they get a classic or somethign worth money.

the mk1 polo that fastdub recently bought was pulled out of the scrappy by me a year or so ago and the mk2 polo i gave the missus for xmas also came from the same scrappy, i've bought maybe a couple of dozen cars from scrappies over the past few years and had no trouble with them, i guess its all down to the guys who run them, who you know ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) etc.

I've bought cars from my local scrappy, they had a mint 309gti up there recently, absolutely immaculate and real low mileage, some old guy had dropped it up there because the clutch had gone, came with the v5, mot, and history for a £75. Unfortunately i was skint at the time.

I thought that if you bought a car as 'trade', or 'for restoration' or as 'spares' it did not have to be roadworthy or have any form of warranty. Certainly when I was involved in the motor trade that was the case... And in the case of the classic dealers, who sell project cars or cars fresh from import for resto, that must still be the case.

When i last checked the only legal way of selling a car now without any type of come back is that the receipt must state that vehicle is to be trailered away, and is sold as spares only.
I keep a carbon copy receipt book for selling or buying cars, get both parties to sign them then each have a copy. No arguing then and the buyer will know that.
As for buying from scrap yards i am affraid it is just the way of the country now. Not getting into politicts but vote out the scum we have in government now and things may change for the better for retro. ;D ;D

Theres no point trying to understand the bloody-minded mentality of someone who can`t bear to think that another person might get some use or pleasure out of something THEY have decided has had it`s time. I don`t get it at all but it`s a popular stance, as others have said if the car has just been lerft with them or there was no V5 they will sell them, it`s only when the owner has said it`s got to be scrapped. As far as warranties are concerened, it`s a grey area, the law states that all sorts of warranties have to be given but once you get below £2000 what`s expected of the seller falls dramatically, the law does state that a certain amount of faults are acceptable on a cheap used car, and if someone got in touch with trading standards saying they were`nt happy with a £200 car they would be laughed at, and it wouldnt go near a court.

Politics is a bit like eating a dog sh1t sandwich and someone offering you a cat sh1t sandwich instead. You still end up eating sh1t either way.
Enuff politics.... back to cars;)
