one question; is it as fun as it used to be? i had a scalextric when i was a young 'un and clearly it was the best toy ever. i haven't used one for over 10 years though so i was wondering if it would still be fun or if i should wait until i have kids myself. i've always had a peek at them in the shops when i've had a chance and i always find some amazing car that i need to have. i'm toying with the idea of buying one as i'm moving into a quite spacious flat (don't tell the girlfriend). just don't know if it will be a waste of money or whether it will provide hours of joy like it did when i was 7. anyone here got a nice setup?

Yes and no. No if you just have a very basic track... with things like Playstations etc providing the Gran Turismo's, Toca's and Forza's theres just no point. However if you have the space for a really nice big and challenging track then you really can't beat it. Especially with the amount of ultra realitic Retro cars to put around it that are now available.

Yes it will be fun for a while. it will also be fun with a load of mates and a few beers for an evening.
We still have a load (and I mean a load) in the loft that one day we will get down and get a track set up. Thing is we are now playing with real cars.............

One of the guys at work brought a load in when we moved offices. We set it up when we moved in but have rarely played with it.

i'm remembering how annoying it is to jump up and put your car back on the track every 30 seconds. i would have room for a hell of a track though. i might just buy some of the cars to stand on a shelf and look at.

I got loads of track for my young 'un and he loves it (so do I ;D). It's just a ball-ache setting the damn thing up and having to put it all away again because there's just not enough room. He's got 4 trucks but they're naff unless they've got trailers on (which they haven't)

i have a ton of it from when i was a kid. it started with the basic figure-8 track set with 2 metros, and every birthday, xmas and all pocketmoney went on more and more and more track and cars. I used to pass hours and hours on end with it, curse word my parents off royally with the noise and interference on the telly. I rummaged it out of my parents loft maybe a couple of years back for some nostaligia but was quite dissappointed. a lot of the track seems to have buckled and the joints were like speed-bumps. i could maybe straighten it out but it would be a lot of effort. also all the tyres had gone funny and all the cars had zero traction. Needs new rubber all round. I could get it going again with a bit of time and effort, but I'm not sure if it would keep me amused for very long now. I have plenty space here, but even though, a big track will get in the way and look untidy. Dunno....maybe best left as a memory for me

we have a fair bit, but not allowed it out often dad collects the cars ( I dare to think how many he has now!) , very impressed with the detail in them nowadays, hours of fun ..setting it up. great fun though much more social than the games console ha I just remembered we use to have a burnout bit of track like a rolling road you put oil into, rev em up then flip a switch and they were released with a cloud of smoke

Scalextrics has tried to move with the times with the digital sets which allow lane changing - which certainly adds that extra dimension, problem is that the changeover tracks (which are like the model railway points) Are not everywhere so on a long track you could be stuck behind another car on the same lane until you come to another changeover. I prefer the older non-magnet cars - as theres more skill to be had in balancing the throttle, hanging the back end of the cars out ;D The latest cars are certainly incredibly detailed and make great static models in their own right, they are also alot faster, but you basically build up the speed until the point where they just flip off the track - theres no progression For me the best fun is setting up the track - the fun of actually racing wanes after about an hour. Would really like the old 24hr Porsche set with the gold & silver 911s - it was my dream to own that as a kid ;D

A few years ago I bought a couple of the 'drift' sets (tough single-colour plastic 350z x 2 with 360 degree guides) and the cars are great...Very easy to slide and because they'll spin rather than flip, you have to 'drive' them much more carefully....
