Word up punks I'm going to fettling a subaru 1800 wagon soon, it has got one or two rattly tappets. The engine in these has hydraulic lifters, and I presume that when these things start rattling its due either to low oil pressure or them being gummed up and not 'opening' properly even though the oil pressure is satisfactory. My question is, can they be revived? Is there any technique that can 'restore' hydrailc tappts? I'm thinking along the lines of soakling them in thinners for a long time or even getting them ultrasonically cleaned. Anyone got any views on this? here are a few Subaru pics for good measure. Âre those Pug 505 wheels? Yes!! Leone van? WTF Nice TRIMZ How much would I like one of these. When I grow up I might track one down and import it. RUST

I've just repaired a hyundai that had the most gummed up set of lifters i've seen in a long while. I compressed each one in the vice to get all the oil out then soaked them over night in petrol. I had a few rattles when i first started it up but after running it up to temp a few times it's now like swiss watch.

Nice one. If the problem is down to gumming up, sounds like it can be cured witout too much pain. GR8!

Miht be an idea an idea to change the oil and filter and try running some flushing oil through it before stripping it all down.
I had a saphire years ago with noisey tappets and I ran that with a gallon of diesel in the sump for an hour then changed the oil an filter. It was lovely after that, although I accept no responsibility if your engine goes bang ;D ;D

Well, the engine has to come out of this subaru anyway to do the clutch. I'm gonna try and get a set of SH tappets and give em 'the treatment' beforehand, then when the engine is out, wang em in, change the clutch, new cam belts, and put it all back together.
Did the sapphire have hydraulic tappets? What engine would that have been?
incidentally 'tappette' is a french slag word for 'gayboy'.

I cleaned and re-used the hydraulic tappets in my Mk2 Golf 16v no problems by following this guide - very straightforward but watch out for the little tiny springs flying out if the Subaru ones are simlar! www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76499&highlight=tappetVirtually silent operation afterwards and they'd done 150k miles before I cleaned them up!

I did a vauxhall set a while back. popped out the little hydraulic thingy from the body of the lifter by tapping it down on a bit of wood. Soaked the lot in degreaser, then reassembled. the first minute or so sounded like a brass band falling down the stairs, but all was well after they had filled up properly.

omg 1.8 cvh.. the worst engine ford ever did (even worse than the v4) we had more than our fair share of them in the garage normally for small ends as the pistons break up for some reason

I did a daewoo recently (ohc vauxhall lump), was rattly as a bag of spanners.. put some flush through it, changed oil and filter with oem bits and its quiet as a mouse now.
Worth a go for 20 squids and half an hour?

Nice TRIMZ My parents had two of these in a row, loved them. Neither broke in 5 years, not a single fault. Yes, soak the tappets. I did this with a Rover V8 set once, they worked fine after.

It was lovely after that, although I accept no responsibility if your engine goes bang ;D ;D Sack that! Drop a litre of oil, top up with a litre of Automatic Transmission Fluid. Has a fairly similar viscosity to most engine oils at around 100cSt. Is also full of nice flushing-type chemicals, is cheaper than actual flushing agent, and you can run it for a fair while and not do any damage. I usually shove some in about 400 miles before an oil change is due, works wonders.

Well I have successfuly scored a spare engine off eBay for £13 so I am gonna nick the tappets out of it and see if they can be dismantled like these VW ones. If not I will squeeze the oil out of them and soak them in petrol for a week or so, hopefully that will do the biz.
