No, you won't understand why people want to do it, because you're a decent honest human being. I can understand why people steal things - personal gain. I really can't understand vandalism though, and if anything it's the one thing that would make me want to break some fingers. But that's a bit too daily mail Sorry to hear of the grief, hopefully they'll pick on someone less tolerant soon and end up learning a lesson...

Honestly, what has this world come to? In only the last week, the shop at the end of the street has had his transit fiddled with, the ol' boy that lives next door has had both front tyres of his spotless (like 45k) sharknose 520i slashed and Ive had dodgy travellers knocking on my door asking after the 'scort. Almost makes me glad to be at work so i know its safe D

Before I tell this story, I'll make it clear that I don't condone vigilante action. However... We had loads of trouble down the quiet country lane where I lived in Dorset. The local fuzz weren't interested ("Hmmm donuts" I think was the answer), so a friend of a friend got a local bike club involved. They sat in a Transit outside the houses one evening until the lad responsible (and we all knew who it was) came around with his bag of tricks. They jumped out, talked quietly to him - honestly, not one blow was exchanged - and persuaded him into the back of the Transit. They then drove the lad out into the country - about 30 miles away just outside Bridport, on the top of one of the hills. They then asked him to get out. By this point, they had managed to persuade him to remove every item of clothing. Again, not one blow was exchanged. They drove off, leaving this lad clutching his meat n two veg in the middle of nowhere. No money, clothes... nothing. We all know he got home *somehow* as we saw him again later that week. But strangely, we never had any more problems or heard anything more about it. True story!

I think the transit may have ended up in the solent though instead had a few of the repeat victims had their way...

A retro owning friend over here had a similar experience - sickening and getting more common unfortunately. On the 'prevention' techiniques - first time some cops were actually sitting in a car around the corner, he pointed the guy out and they proceeded to take his statement as the guy ambled off! Of course took ages and the guy was gone. Next time - he simply followed the guy who had done the cars in the square, we then printed out a polite notice ( in English, french,Dutch and German - the language barrier here is UNbelievable ) telling him he'd been spotted, we now knew where he lived and he was risking his health and that of his loved ones - so stay out of the square etc... - worked like a charm.........no blows and minimum fuss. I lived in a predominantly African area when I first arrived - they caught a guy red handed - it was not a pretty sight! strange how we all seem to want the same punishment dolled out but those in place don't seem to hear the cries.....

The whole country is depressed. In fact, as a nation, we are ten times more depressed than we were during the early 20th century. Depressed people drink heavily, take drugs, commit crime, get pregnant young, get ill, commit suicide, do badly at school, vandalise things, etc.

Well over Christmas I had the wing on my Golf keyed quite badly and deeply, a zigzag pattern down it. They must have actually stopped and stood there to do it. Got into the car this morning and the door was bent back at the top and muddy marks over the door handle. Looks like they had their foor on it for leverage. Really boils my urine. Its not like the golf is desireable, its an 90 automatic driver in grey on rusty steelies.
If I want something I earn the money and buy it, I don't take someone elses property. I'm going to ring the police but what for I have no idea.

I've given up bothering with the Police now. In the last two months my S class Merc has had the bonnet keyed deeply, twice, the second time one week after repainting it My wifes Pug 206 has had one door keyed and the bonnet danced on and keyed. It now needs a new bonnet. My step daughters 1990 Clio which was an absolute basket-case (her first car!) when she'd finished with it, got keyed across the bonnet so much that they must have taken ages to do it. I've got lots of letters from the Police offering help as a victim of crime....here's an idea, help us by dealing with the scrote who did it. We pointed them in the right direction of the scum as I'd already found out who did it but, apparently, all the rights are held by the crooks, victims have no rights. There will be no more damage going on here.......

I have a story which I can't really publish, involving a group of local hoodlums and unspecified kitchen equipment (not a whisk, more like a spatula, but not quite). There's no reasoning with these sorts of morons, so just show them that you are utterly insane. Worked for me.
In the short term, make sure everyone reports all damage to the police, no matter how minor, and gets a crime number. It will increase crime figures for the area and hopefully should eventually result in bigger police presence to counteract it.

I don't buy the 'whole country is drepressed' line. I've actually suffered clinical depression but I didn't go around trashing other people's stuff.
Thats a bit like badly behaved kids in a pub and when you complain about them the parents tell you they are "only being kids" etc. I was "only a kid" once but if I misbehaved I got a proper telling off/slap. So I learnt it isn't the correct way to behave.
Perhaps these things are related?
I feel for all you guys with damaged cars - I've been there and it sucks.

If you report it and nothing is done, fair play to complain. But non-reporting just means the government can say "crime stats are improving".

Exactly why I've just reported it. If no-one reports it then nothing will be done. If I wasnt the only one in my area and everyone reports it they will be more inclined to try and stop it. I feel sorry for everyone else who is victim to it, its bloody curse word. The Girlfriend is quite upset by it all.

Absolutely, it's all a numbers game!
One minor incident isn't going to get you anywhere, but if there are multiple minor incidents happening over a period and everyone reports them, it shows a pattern that the police can work off. A car being keyed isn't much as a standalone crime, but as a pattern showing that £50K of damage has been done within the same night, it could help someone get sent down.
Also, morons who do this sort of thing tend to do it on their own doorstep, so it should help narrow it down.

My home village is a bit vigilante with stuff like this. Basically all the kids in the village had it drilled into them that vanalism = broken fingers. Closest thing to vandalism i've seen round here is when somebody keeps swinging the swing round and round till its wrapped up haha.
