Fiat Marea Weekend's.
We're going to look at a '97 R reg Marea Weekend TD 100 ELX tomorrow - 170K, aircon, etc, and it's still got 2 blue keys and one red.
Are they really as bad as everyone used to say?

They can't be that bad, can they? There's plenty of them running around...

Yes, but plenty more with terminal engine failure in the scrapyards. Unless it is free, I would walk.
If you are looking for a cheap estate I have a 7-series Volvo with T&T very cheap right now.

I looked at one. And then ran. Is it the red one near Milton Keynes in the AutoTrader at £750 ? Run away, run away.

Current vehicle collection: 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible - in mid-life crisis yellow No new retro as yet ... all attempts to sneak one onto the drive have failed.

Yes, but plenty more with terminal engine failure in the scrapyards. So is it just the engines that give trouble then? I've been reading up on them, apart from a slightly suspect fit and finish inside, they're supposedly at least as good as their rivals... If you are looking for a cheap estate I have a 7-series Volvo with T&T very cheap right now. To big for SWMBO, and she doesn't want my S60 as a daily.

What was wrong with the one you looked at? There's duff cars in every model range - everyone seems to slag of the Marea, but can't actually say what's wrong with them...

The one I looked at was a 20v petrol estate - it rattled and just felt unsafe. I'm aware of frequent engine failures and expensive suspension parts. We bought the Zafira instead (which has cost be £2200 in the past fortnight ).

I'm going to go against the grain here. I know sod all about them so I'm taking the middle ground, while feeling dangerously drawn to the need to buy cars that everyone hates.

Hmmm, a Marea was something I'd vaguely considered to replace O/H's Astra estate... may have to scrub that idea!
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I know a man with three mareas. one 20v, one 1.6 petrol, one turbodiesel. Mind you, he also has two cromas, half a dozen pandas and a couple of alfa arnas, lol. The Mareas don't seem to give him half the bother that the rest of his collection does...
They are no better and no worse than anythng else that age, and can often be had for next to nothing. don't think I'd be spending £750 on one tho.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

My stepfather bought one nearly new a few years ago now and it's been an absolutely cracking car and lovely to drive. He's not one for washing/maintaining/pampering his cars at all. Just jumps in, drives, parks up etc, with no bother at all. He gave it to my younger brother when it was time for change, who's still running around in it now with no bother whatsoever. Brother, however had one prior to this and it was a complete bagoshite. Similarly, a mate of mine has a couple of car lots and has 2 Weekends, both the same colour and very similar ages. One is absolutley mint and drives lovely, the other (with better spec, sunroof, fogs, alloys etc) is again, a total bagoshite and is falling apart inside and out. Had a guy in work the other day who's after selling his as it's cutting out all the time. Say's he'll be happy to take £300 for it. I think I would too. I reckon that's about the most I'd pay for one. Like said, some good, some bad. I'd have one. I like the lines better than the Bravo/Brava. Stepdad's car mentioned at the begining...

I like the look, and the 20v engine. But not much else.
