I go through the occasional hunt through the salvage sites for a nosey, and the thread on re-shelling reminded me I'm overdue a look at Simpson Salvage. I quite like buying cat D or cat C cars that have been written off because it's, like, really old and stuff and that tiny dent isn't worth repairing. So what have I found? Click the piccies for a link, because these are all up for purchase as of now! A Volvo 940S Wagon, written off for flat tyres!? £300 sir. Keeping it Swedish, this Saab 9000 Turbo reckons to have a bump up the rear - must be a small one, looks fine! £400 Looks a little worse for wear on this side, but that's the only damage - filler it, spray the lot with red oxide, super rat prelude! a tad under £500 for that... Wow, forgotten all about these! Needs a wing and a door but hey - it's not like painting one from a scrapyard is going to be an issue!! £495.....

Elsewhere, HBC have got a tasty looking Omega MV6 Wagon which appears to only need bolt-on parts. Sadly it's auction, not fixed price, but some of the stuff I've watched previously has gone for beer money.....

I was having a look on here the other day, saw this - non retro, but a quality reason to be written off. Description 'Vandalised - Covered in Paint - Drives - £2195' Someone's sprayed abuse all over it and thrown gloss paint down one side Remainds me of Partridge's Rover 'Cock curse word Partridge'

What is needed to get Cat C cars back on the road? Retest? certificate of some sort? Or just fix 'em back up?

What is needed to get Cat C cars back on the road? Retest? certificate of some sort? Or just fix 'em back up? Cat C will need an bog standard MoT as the original certificate should have been destroyed. It'll also need a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC), which is just to certify that it's the car it's meant to be, i.e. all the numbers match what the DVLA have, and they've not been tampered with. It's nothing to do with standards of repair or anything like that, it's just the identity. Cat D just needs an MoT and then drive. Cat A should be crushed, and cat B is to break for spares only. Neither should ever end up back on the road.

you would think that I know a lad who bidded on a white calibra dtm on evil bay he won the auction did a hpi and it came back as a cat b this car had full mot and tax and was wrote off over a year before When an insurer writes a car off, they usually have a disposals agent, who guarantees to the insurer that they'll pay them a set certain percentage of market value for each car, depending on what category of write off they are. The disposals agent has to be a certificated dismantler, member of various governing bodies, but some do slip through the net, and back on the road for various reasons. I've come across a handful of cat A and B cars on the road, mainly ringers, or commercials where the cab (with all identifying marks) has been swapped onto another chassis. Contrary to what people believe, the new computerised MOT does not flag if a car is a write off at any point, as it isn't linked to HPI, or the PNC checks that the cops carry out. Simpsons is a huge very legit place, afaik you're not allowed to remove parts yourself. If you want parts, they'll probably have it shelved in the warehouse.

Don't Cat C cars have their V5C doc revoked? Do they come back with a new number or the original one re-issued after the VIC?
Shame that jags only a 3.2 or I'd be very tempted for that money.

They get issued with the same registration they had prior to being written off, unless for whatever reason that's been allocated to another car (not normally a problem unless it was running a private plate I suppose).

That's not a few dents! It's fcuked!!
Look at the roof! They're also made of very tough metal (even if it does rust like crazy!). We have a spares one that I've stripped a fair bit off in better nick than that, It's got the passenger door stoved in and I couldn't knock that straight!
In it's favour it's the later model with struts and discs up front but it's lots of work and even 2nd hand panels for these cost quite a bit.
