Rover 216 GTi's the DOHC honda engined ones, I know its a non-vtec lump. But what engine is in them, is it a B-series engine? And could it be upgraded to a B16A engine? I just though how awesome one would be with a VTi engine in it (so tunable and turbo kits for them seem to be really affordable). I remember driving one just before I passed my driving test and being really impressed with engines eagerness to rev. Just pondering really, thanks ;D

Its a D series engine (D16), to convert it you would need to alter the engine mounts and IIRC theres a fair bit of re-wiring to do. You can buy kits to convert the engine mounts in Hondas from D to B, if they fit the Rover is another question....

What are the Vtec D-series engines like (I guess thats what the early vtec CRX had)? are they tunable and are there any capacity increases?

The Mrk2 CRXs got the B16a VTEC engine. I don't think they were fitted with D series VTECs until the Del-Slow....
I've not really played with a D-series VTEC, but speaking genrally, from what I've read they don't respond to tuning quite as well as the B-series. They are cheap however.

If I am allowed to suggest the unthinkable, what about the good old K series? 160 BHP VVCs are pretty cheap and easily available now, and there is a turbo 1.8 K which is begging for a bit more boost.
Interestingly, there was an AWD version of the Concerto, so there may be the possibility of an AWD rover 216.

Don't get me wrong I like the K-series, my mates MG ZS is a total riot great handling and suprisingly torquey. But there is no denying the power, revs and tunability of Honda's engines, IMO they produce the best petrol engine of the last decade.

Have a look at this, not a lot of detail so far but shows what can be done.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I'm sure I saw a lad on MG-rover.org who had a 216 koop with a Honda Vtec engine in, I think a B-series Vtec engine would wang straight in more or less. Used to be a site about exactly this subject I think too, some lad had found a way to make the stock Honda ECU re-mappable too for use with this turdblowa. something like 216turbo.co.uk or something (not exactly that as it doesnt work)

engine in the rover is a d16a8 or d16a9
same as 87-91 civic/crx 16v, NOT VTEC.
d series vtec is, as stated earlier, from the 92 onwards delsol/eg civivs and is sohc not dohc.
b series vtec is dohc and can go in the rover but requires new mounts/ a bit of wiring/ new manifolds etc.
lots of info on crx-uk.co.uk and aforementioned rovertech type sites.
HTH.
