The exhaust on my Allegro has snapped where it enters the first exhaust silencer, it looks too fiddly to repair by welding and as the full weight of the exhaust seems to be centred there it will only break again.. So is it legal/reasonable to just bin the silencer off and clamp a straight though pipe in its place? Would it pass an MOT like this?
The most annoying part is the exhaust looks nearly new and I snapped it, doh!

exhausts can leak and blow and still pass an MOT on an old car, as long as the noise isnt "excessive" and no fumes get in the cabin it should pass.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

My viva was running just one silencer with a side exit - to save money building a full system, passed mot fine.

Did the same thing a good few years ago, to my mates mk3 fiesta. He brought a Peco backbox and fitted that, then we chopped out the middle box and replaced it with a free section of exhaust pipe from the local Mr. Exhaust's bin (because he said it ''wasn't loud enough!'')
Ended up being a little too loud IMO, so just be aware. Twas great fun thou ;D

it'll pass the test no worries, however, my old colt had the boxes removed and straight piped, and it sounded curse word, like a wasp in a tin. not good!

Thats worth knowing but in this case the noise is definately excessive and fumes are getting into the cabin. Its basically a down pipe that terminates under the rear seat at the moment. Very noisy!

Right, removed the exhaust system, chopped out the first box and bodged in a length of tube. The tube was cut from a frame of a double bed the missus and I snapped in half last week. Id love to say it was through vigarous hanky panky but it was more a case of went to bed thursday, woke up with the bed snapped in half on friday morning. Anyway, I digress.
The "repaired" exhaust isnt blowing from the centre anymore, but it is definately loud! The missus came out the house to tell me to turn the engine off as it was causing the floor to viabrate. It sounds a bit like a Lancaster bomber, the neighbours are a bit miffed too. I'm hopeful it will pass a MOT though.... fingers crossed!

can you not use the centre silencer from another car? The middle bit fell out of the exhaust on J's polo two days after we got it... some helpful soul had stuck the pipe back into the silencer with large dollops of bodyfiller. I liberated a sierra CVH centre box from the scrap pile on the basis that it was about the same size, and also straight through, and welded it in. Car sounds fine, same cost/effort as straight through, job done.
I do have a big pile of exhausts handy, and therfore unlikely to resort to furnature in search of raw material, but I'm sure a scrapyard wouldn't charge much more than a fiver for a likely looking small silencer off something.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I could use a different silencer and use that instead but that would involve a bit more effort. I'm pretty pleased on how its gone today, aslong is its MOTable. You know how it is, one mans ASBO magnet is anothers loud fruity burble.
As soon as I get an MOT ill cart it off down to Stafford and get a stainless system fitted. I cant see the thin walled bed frame lasting too long anyway.

My brothers e28 bmw 525 (2.7 litre straight six) sounded like the apocalypse with a bodge job like that on it, though he used spare exhaust piping, not a broken bed. He sold it before the MOT so I can't tell ya if it passed.

Ill try to pop in and say hi, it all depends on how were doing for time. If we miss the return ferry were stuffed! It will be good to meet up with other retro minded individuals along the way, especially if they have a good took kit and don't mind repairing engines, clutches or know anything about SU carburettors!

My Volvo has passed it's last 3 MOT's with a blowing exhaust. It gets an advisory for "minor exhaust gas leak" every time.
On moderns it's a bit different, even a pinhole can totally throw emissions out on some cars.
