I may be asking a really stupid questionbut how do you make a car "rat look" they cant be rotton and generally curse word old knackers as they all look pretty solid, but how do you maintain that rough look without them rotting away? if you know what i mean?

Wax.........Over the surface rust. Stops it spreading. Its an old trick we use on the vans between touch ups on stone chips. I've never tried it on patches as big as those on the vws but I'm sure it'll work the same.

I beleive it is possible to get primer effect paint which wont soak up water like normal primer will if left exposed.

The air cooled VW's always make good rat look vehicles. Though my '72 bay camper is more 'tat look' at the moment. ;D I like the other stuff though, cool as.  |

OK, so how do you go about "accentuating" a Rat-look??? If I took my £21 Polo as a basis, would this work... 1. Spread liberally with Nitro-Mors 2. Attack with sander to take off a bit more paint 3. Leave out in the elements for a few weeks to cultivate surface rust 4. Apply this wax stuff liberally to stop surface rust getting worse... Anyone? Thoughts? Dust? Anyone? |

wash the car with a reasonable amount of salt and fairy liquid...the worms don't like it neither.... ;D

Hmm, the rat-look VWs I saw at RTTS seemed to be sprayed over with lacquer - you could put a matting agent in if you wanted, but some of them had an odd shine, yet they were rusty....  Looked really cool! The only problem with the whole rat look is that if you have any filler on the bodywork you'd have to cover it with paint. Cos a) it'd absorb moisture if exposed and b) it don't look as good as rust! ;D |
