I have just got in from copleting my second Nav rally, it was again superb and the most fun i have ever had in a car! everyone loved the chevette and we placed a very respectable 9th out of 18! i will get some pics and video up as soon as i get them. However, Camarthenshires finest police department had to spoil it. doing 60 down the motorway just cruising it back i got pulled by an unmarked volvo for a routine (bored with nothing better to do) stop. anyway after the usual patronising chat with me explaning why i was in swansea and the cars registerd in tamworth to my dad i got a producer.curse word.the last one i got i produced my document (all correct and in order) and a month later south wales police took me to court for not doing it. so this time ill have to get a recipt.i wouldnt mind but 3 mins later a rotton xr3i whent bombing past at bout 120, but thats obviously ok! They even asked me where i had been, and not wanting to say tearing around the countryside on a rally i said the pub (which we met up at after the rally) and they didnt even breathalise me. But apart from that Nav rallys rock!! I'm off home tomorowas I'm going to the historic motorsport show on friday (anyone going, convoy??) so thought id have a few days at home and do some bits to the shuv it. Well I'm off to bed now, just had to get it off my chest, stupid pigs!

Sounds like you had fun on the rally! I love them The thing with getting stopped for no particular reason by the Police is, with me, I don't mind really. If all my documents are in order, I'll glady prove who I am - I'd want them to stop my car if it had been nicked and was driving around. I've had it about five or six times over the years.

What a bunch of eejuts If you wouldn't mind doing a show and tell, is there any way you would give me more info on navigation rallies - I'm not talking the 'official' line, I mean what's it REALLY like doing them in your experience - and what does it cost?

yeah, true its not that (my documents are all legal!)but its the patronising way i alwys get talked to, i assume its just because I'm a yound lad in something that stands out a bit. they just wanted a look at a proper car!

I do the rallys through my student union motorsport club, the winner of the previous rally organises the route and you are given a road book. the road book gives you co ordinates for the clues and tulips to follow (same as road rallys). Last night cost me £7 for the OS map and £20 in petrol. it was a bit shorter this one with only 60 odd miles of driving. the first one i did was 100 miles! It really is a brilliant way to enjoy your car. its late a night with no cars about on tiny national speed limit roads that are never used. you get a real feel for rallying with a co-driver calling out pace notes and its a good laugh with your mates/similarly minded petrol heads. if there was enough interest and i had time i could organise one for the retro rides crew?! seriously do one! ive done a couple of trackdays and sprints and this is by far the best fun. hope fully if i start winning i can get into proper road rallying.

God I'm jealous, I wish there had been something like that when I was at Uni
I'm interested in giving it a go, I drag race at the moment so it would have to be something that wasn't too expensive to get into, which was why I asked.
If you ever do get round to organising something that doesn't require an NUS card, I'll be first in line to sign up!!

Sounds cool! I'd like to have ago but finding the time at the moment is difficult! I'd love to rally prep the cars, I'd personally find that more satisfying than driving if I'm honest! But I'm sure nothing can beat the thrill of drifting around country lanes and learning to keep the car out of the ditch!! ;D

The correct answer to the question "where have you been"? from the police is "That's none of your business", they have absolutely NO right to know what you have been up to, like anyone would reply, "It's a fair cop guv, yer expert detectoring has got me bang to rights, I was robbin old peoples homes all day."
Sadly, with Id cards on the horizon the cops like to think they are entitled to more info about us than they are.

Racer 86, how did you get the pigs off your back when they tried to bust you for not producing your docs?

The problem with the law is that they genuinely do pick on old motors (believe me I know! ), if they were spot checking neds, yuppies and the general public, then it'd be different, but you see far more of it with young guys in old cars than with ANY other group! I've heard this elsewere too, but I've only been pulled over by the police on one occasion, when I had a taillight out. Even then, there were no problems, despite the car looking like scrapyard fodder (a Morris Minor van that was called 'The Shed').

when i got a court summons the police had not taken any record of me producing my documents but luckily the bloke i had sold the car too sent me the MOT so after spending 6 hours in the station and 2 hours on the phone i was able to show them my documents which of course were all in order and they dropped it. the screw up was all because a copper took my documents and didnt fill in any forms. it is supposed to be a civil that deals with it, it was my first producer so i didnt know any better, and i got treated like a criminal rying to get away with it. i was told to let it go to court as i could have produced my documents there and the pigs wouild have got in trouble for wasting time! i produced my docs last night for my current producer and it was fine, no hassle job done.

Suppose it depends which coppers are stopping you, but the ones round here are notorious b*stards, many of them in any case. This whole idea of ID cards and bloody microchipping motors so they can track them is more than a little disconcerting for me too, it's only a short goose-step away from thought police and being arrested for not being normal in my opinion!

Totally agree with your second comment Rev #9.
Yet, the police don't seem to stop people like that round here. You do see them driving about & the good old ''safety cam' van'' pops up from time to time.... but apart from that...
Now I've said that, wait for the post tomorrow night titled ''F**king Police With Nothing Better To Do'' ;D ;D

I'm with racer re: the old BIll down here, and I'm pleased to say the Swansea Evening Post's been having a pop at their speed cameras.
