Just lately these "retro" styled Cruiser thingies have been in my thoughts a fair bit... I was thinking that they may represent quite acceptable "family" transport - They've got plenty o' space, look like nothing else on the road and would have acceptable levels of comfort / reliabilty / safety for something to be used everyday for cating kiddies about etc. What I'm really asking is should I be trying to tempt "she-who-must-be-obeyed" into one - It would fit with my "retro" sensibilities and meet the needs she has for everyday use - and be a bloody sight more interesting than a bland eurobox... However, are they just a little too kitch for their own good? Do they run the risk of falling into the same "wankermobile" categories as New Mini's and Beetles. Your thoughts please! (and here's a few to illustrate the thread! )

As i sit here after a trip to the local ale house eating a kebab, i say they are horrible and would not be seen dead in one

Oooh tough one... I sort of like what they're doing with the styling, as it is different from other stuff on the roads... Then on the other hand, they are a new car and have that "let's pretend we've got a hotrod and not a mummywagon" thing going on... I can't really decide one way or the other - I don't like them because they're a bit crass for my liking, but then again if I had to buy a new car in this sort of MPV sector, it'd probably be on the list somewhere near the top (although I prefer the slightly left-field Vel Satis I'm sat firmly on the fence with this one!! ;D

Still undecided I like the first one but none of the others. There is a PT Cruiser around Oxford, gold like the 5th one down, had chrome steelies and white walls, I liked that.

I don't like them at all. I think they look too big and ugly.

I quite like them, maybe I'm getting old. This is my 'family vehicle' Not retro in the slightest but nice and ugly.

I finally voted yes!
But only if they have fat steels, a T-bar shfter and a mighty blow with the lowering stick. ;D
Oh, and no flames!!

Didn't care for it at first. Starting to grow on me though. Seems like one of the more reliable of the newer cars. Actually quite a bit of space for a smaller car. We were considering buying one ourselves. Saw some pics somewhere of a London Cab treatment on the front end once. Looked rather nice. Can't find them now though

Not too keen on he whole 'new-retro' car thing at all.... All a bit too 'trying too hard to be cool' IMHO I don't think 'updating' the styling of old cars (ie mini and beetle) really works.... I don't think you can have 'instant cool'.... it has to develop..... having said that, I think the Figaro works a bit better, because it isn't a copy of something, and the details, like the steel wheels, small lights ect seem to fit in better.... Just my opinion....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I don't hate them, but i don't like them either. I.d quite fancy a 2 or 3 door version. Or even a panel van or pick up.

Hmm... I'm definitely undecided ;D In black with some chrome they look good enough, but flames etc are definite no-nos... The best modern-day MPV type vehicle IMO: A modern day Renault 4 if ever there was one

I really don't like them - Chrysler have styled it all 'Hot-Rod' which would be cool if they had a big V8 in the front and giant back wheels - instead they have weedy petrol and even diesel engines, which I suppose are perfectly adequate in a modern boring sort of way. If I was in the market for a small/medium MPV i'd look at something that pushes the boundries of modern car design and innovation - i've been impressed by the Merc A class. The people that drive PT Cruisers seem to be those going through a bit of a 'mid-life' - but are not quite brave enough to get that Harley Fat Boy they'd been hankering after. Theres a big modding and owners club scene (there was a gathering at Billing last year at the same time as the Polo show) Alot of the moddifications are rather cheesey and tackily applied rather akin to the rest of the boy-racer brigade - except the owners are 50+ and should know better Abit like that uncomfortable feeling of your Dad listening to and enjoying Eminem. Having said that I'd have this one.....

I don't have a problem with them, but if it's sensible family motoring your after there are a lot of cars that do the job better and can be made to look very cool without the kitch.

When I first saw them I was a bit impressed, but I've driven one, and it really didn't feel at all like a hotrod. Comfortable enough, but to be honest as a hot rod it fails in that it's a front wheel drive MPV so doesn't feel at all like the hot retro car it wants to be, and as an MPV there are more sensible, and more practical choices at that price, so to me it just doesn't cut it in any class.

I like it when car companys make someting that isnt a copy of all the other cars on the road. I like the PT Cruiser for that reason.
When we went to pick up the OHs car new car from the Chrysler/Jeep showroom I had a good look round a Cruiser and its not really an MPV more a fancy looking hatchback. Still quite cool.
