Flat spotting in watercooled VAG car (Mk2 Audi 80)

Well my Audi's running abit funny at the mo. Its got a strange, random flat spot. Sometimes it's got it, sometimes it hasnt.

I drove up to Reading from Portsmouth the other day. Was fine up the motorway etc, but when i started crusing through the local villages at slower speeds it started flat spotting and spluttering pretty bad.

I stopped after i realised everytime it kicked in after flat spotting it was dumping loads of smoke. I pulled over, let it tick over for a few seconds, then revved it abit. It was fine thereafter.

I hate the carb thats on it anyway (Pierburg 2B) but havent had a chance to get something else for it yet (Suggestions/What ya got?)

I thought it might be the vacum hose, but it looks ok, i think.

There is one pipe coming from the orange thing in the filter box which is not connected. is this the thermostat for pre heaters (there arent any fitted :rolleyes: ). Please excuse the ghetto airbox mods (not done by me)





I'm not sure what else to think. I mean it could have been some curse word in the carb, but there is a fuel filter (new) fitted. Any suggestions welcome. The fuel economy is also pretty shocking (18mpg max)

Is there a big rubber gasket under the carb?, once seen a 1.8 Audi 80 with one of those that had perished and it was causing all sorts of grief.

thats the same engine as in my wifes mk2 golf, ours did the same thing , slowing down , spluttering then u stop let it idle a minute and its fine again. i changed the carb for a spare i had and its been<apart from current charging prob> fine.

Freakin' 2B carbs, they are a bad design and give no end of trouble, especially with the auto-choke.

I'd check for air leaks around the rubber sealing ring and the auto choke waxstat, otherwise get a Weber for it.

My mate has a Weber on his Audi Coupe 1.8 and it sounds sweet as!
