I found some dusty 6x9 speakers in the garage and thought they'd be alright in the Merc. Before hacking into the rear shelf I thought I'd make sure they worked, but all I got was a really tinny sound. Thought it might be the wires the wrong way round so swapped them over.... same result. My crappy Argos shelf speakers work OK, just these 6x9's... Are the speakers knackered? They look alright - not really much to 'em is there!? Or do I need something more substantial in the wiring department? (I'm using the original '70s wires ) Maybe I should stop being such a cheapskate and go out and buy a new pair, but I kind of wanna find out what the problem is first!

Heheheh! ;D They're hooked up to a boggo CD player - I was wondering whether 6x9's had to have an amp. The player is pretty loud but it's not the most state-of-the-art bit of kit! But the cruddy speakers I have in the back at the moment distort when I crank up the vols!!!

6x9s do have a tinny sound they generally will produce little or no bass, but if it faint tinny sound then your probably only getting the sound from tne top cone.
To get the full potential an AMP is req mate but i always find them to not have any umph in the speaker, Reckon they are knackered though

Don't use 6x9s in the back at all...They ruin the soundstage and any stereo imaging.

if they've been 'lying around' then the bass cone has probably siezed, the magnet will have rusted - chuck 'em in the skip.
I had 6x9s in my G40, thought they sounded pretty good but the Quattro is just running bog standard factory speakers and it sounds so much better, never bother with 6x9's again! Admittedly it's got a Bose system but it's still factory.
quite why people put so much power in the back is beyond me... it's like going to a gig and standing with your back to the stage. uprate your dash or door speakers and hear the difference - get components and mount the tweeters at just above ear level, mid/bass at just below but facing towards your ear. a lot clearer than mahoosive speakers pointing at your back window.

Thanks for the advice. I was gonna hide the speakers after I fitted them - not really into "ICE" but I just wanted some half decent sound. I have some OK-ish front speakers - the rears are hardly used at all but they're completely w@nk anyway. The old 6x9's won't be thrown out - those big magnets must be good for something! ;D Maybe some "industrial strength" fridge magnets or summat....
