Who if anyone here is rocking a diesel? I'm kind of liking the idea of an old mercedes saloon but with diesel power. preferably non turbo diesel. since as i don't know much about mercedes...i don't know whats available. but I'm kinda liking the idea of a cruising machine that has lovely economy.. even if it does sound like a tractor maybe i am tired and my mind has been warped

i guess an old vw diesel would be far more cheaper and practical. But i just like the idea of a stylish diesel powered mercedes barge

Mercedes W123 300D would be a cool old barge, 3 litre 5 cylinder , the smaller engines are sluggish though.

I agree - a W123 300D would be the diesel to get - the others are SSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW. The W115 came with a 2.0 diesel, and (I think) a 220D, but you'd need a calendar to get to 60mph! ;D Totally and utterly unbreakable though! Don't worry about parts prices cos you just won't need them! Cabbies on the continent have clocked up millions of miles without any fuss. But I am biased! Save even more money by running it on veggie oil!

to run one on veggie oil do you have to do anything or just simply fill the tank and drive away

I've never actually run a diesel on veg oil, but from what I can gather, you need to drain the system completely of diesel, re-fill with veggie oil then bleed the system (as you would if you ran out of diesel). The oil itself doesn't need any treatment - just straight outta the tub! Some suggest a 2% (IIRC) addition of white spirits to thin it a bit, but it aint completely necessary. The oil can even be second-hand - you just have to filter it before stickin it in the tank!

What are the rules about running on veg oil? Are you still supposed to pay tax? Also wont it make your car smell like a chippy?

Also wont it make your car smell like a chippy? think of the business oppertunity here. you could buy a chippy too, then using your 300d, you could get a private plate that spells "chippy",some thing like, say, wpy357y,then drive about. people will see your reg and smell the oil, get hungry and want chips. attract customers purely using the power of suggestion.i reckon it would work on most of the populus too. ;D

;D ;D ;D When running veg oil in a diesel first got exposure, some guys were running 2nd hand oil, and said that their exhaust gas would smell of whatever restaurant it came from! You're supposed to declare whatever oil you use to the tax man, as it is sold as a foodstuff and not a fuel. But let's face it, the reason petrol / diesel is soo expensive in the first place is because of the greedy tax man!! Still works out cheaper than regular diesel, but I think it quadruples the price over using it and...er....forgetting to tell the tax people!

As far as I know theres no law against it, as long as it's declared to the tax man, but plod won't know if it is or it isn't . As for it stinking of chips, I wonder if you could rig up one of those filters from a deep fat fryer into the zorst?! ;D Honestly don't know what the rozzers would would do about a smelly car

there's the vaguest vaguest chance that you'll get pulled by a fuel inspector - occasionally (as in i've seen 'em twice in four years, on the same bit of road) we have an all-out inspector session on the A611 near me. You start off by passing an ANPR setup to query the DVLA to make sure you're taxed. Further down the road there's a team of traffic cops and a clamping crew, ready to pull the untaxed cars off the road. Alongside, on a little parallel residential road, they do the roadworthyness checks on cars that look dodgy - tyres/lights/gaping holes in floor, and i've noticed they have a big 7.5tonne truck marked out with Trading Standards livery and "Road Fuel Testing" on the side - i guess catching hauliers running red diesel but i'm sure they'd notice chipfat instead of diesel too not sure if they'd pull a car, think they're only really there for commercial vehicles, but you'd wanna make sure your chipfat express was in pristine nick so to give them no reason to pul you over in the first place.

These old-tech diesels are GRATE man, they run on any old muck. My old Rover 825 wasn’t fussy. You can slop in diesel, cherryade, kerosene, veg oil, (never could get my hands on much of that though), even old engine oil if you’re sure its not full of nuts and bolts! They love it!.
I’m sure if the rozzers pulled you up with a tank full of chip fat they wouldn’t be very impressed, they’d defo ask to see proof you’d paid the tax on it! Saying that if you paid the tax on one tankful then kept the receipt in your glovebox I don’t see how they could prove the thankful you were using was the one you’d paid tax on! Nazis.
