Can someone please explain what this number means when referring to wastegate acuators? I really feel I should know but it's been hard to get a proper explanation from anywhere! I assume it's something to do with the pressure at which it opens, but it definitely can't be psi.... errrmmmm.....

where do you get that number from. Normally I have only seen them with the pressure in PSI 10,11,18 or whatever but 31 would be a tad too high I would have thought ;D

To be honest, I have absolutely no idea... however, it might help if there was more to go by? Is this just written/stamped somewhere on the actuator or is it part of documentation that relates to the actuator?

Yeah it confuses the hell outta me... the aftermarket actuators are advertised as -31, sold by companies like Burton Power, etc. I don't know the significance of this number at all. I was thinking it was something to do with vacuum, but of course the actuator opens with pressure, and as PhoenixC says, 31psi would be crazy! And more often than not, the number -31 crops up... hardly ever any other figure. It's found in car spec sheets too in mags such as Retro Cars.

are the actuators from burton not adjustable? cos I know on a lot of the aftermarket ones you just put more tension on the spring to increase the pressure they open at

I've seen the adjustable ones, but a lot of these "-31" things seem to be just one setting. I bought a new -18 Cosworth actuator off the bay for a fiver, but really I haven't a clue what it means, unless it's something to do with spring strength. But hey, for a fiver I don't mind buying it just to find out! ;D I reckon Mr_B0llox might know as he does stuff for Garrett but I ain't seen him around lately!

i would have thought that -18 would be 18 psi i know i saw somewhere that had an actuator for a gmc syclone that was set for 31psi!!

in fact there is no logic to these numbers. They are simply the garrett part number, which always take the form of a 6-figure part number (starting with 4 or 7), a dash then another 4-figure number which specifies the variant of that part number. Simply saying ‘a -31 actuator’ means nothing without the main part number. And a -0018 is not 18 psi, nor is a -0031 supposed to work at 31psi. its just the number which gets issued by chance when the part is designed.
However I can only assume that someone has discovered that the xxxxxx-0031 fits as a direct replacement for the xxxxxx-0018 and operates at a higher boost level (has a stiffer spring in it), therefore it is considered an upgrade.
If you have a part number for your Garrett turbo I might be able to tell you the boost threshold at which the actuator opens, as for an actuator alone, all I could tell you is the pressure/displacement relationship, so you could compare different actuators, but this would not tell you the outcome if you put it on an engine as the actuators are ‘calibrated’ during assembly onto the blowa.

Ah! The very man! I knew I could count on you for an answer . No wonder I was so confused then - they're just part numbers... To be honest I'm just going to bolt up this actuator and see if it works (it's just the way I work... "suck it and see" sorta thing! ) - I know it isn't how it's supposed to be done but for starting off I'm gonna have the WG open a bit anyway, so as not to blow anything up the minute I turn the key! Thanks for all the input guys, and hats off to Mr_B011ox for a very comprehensive explanation! ;D
