I used to get complaints all the time from the old witch next door to where I used to live in Cranbrook. Trouble with that part of the world is it is full of old farts who think they are owed respect because 1) they are old and 2) they own their own properties with a (Royal) Tonbridge Wells post code. She said that we made too much noise in the garage and on our driveway - even though we never did any work on the cars before 9am and after 8.30pm at night . She called the police who turned up and talked to both of us at length individually to assess the situation completely. His findings - the old witch should stop bothering him.
So she then started on the "running a business from a residential property" thing. She got the council involved who, understandably, took a dim view to start with. That was until I proved to them that this was a hobby. So she got told by the council to shut up.
So then she started on about owning too many cars and that she could not get in or out of her garage. So she complained to the landlord of the property, who she had known for some time. So he came round, unbeknown to me, on several occasions to observe 1) how many cars there were and 2) could she get in and out OK. His verdict - yes there were excessive cars (in his opinion) but that none of them blocked her house or garage. So he asked if I'd sell some of the cars - as it was, two were for sale anyway so he was happy. She was told to stop bothering him too....
When we moved out she complained that the van we had hired was blocking the light into her kitchen and that if we didn't move it she'd phone the police. She was politely told by my wife to go forth and multiply (or words to that effect) and that perhaps she might like to try turning the switch on the kitchen wall "electric light is an amazing invention, you know. I'm amazed that its passed you by".
She went forth and multiplied at that point.
Apart from her and the snotty couple next to her, who were the most negative people I've ever met (example: me - "morning - lovely day", them "yes, but they say its going to rain next week") no-one else had any problem.... funny that.
The travellers in Dartford never complained - nor did most of the residents around me in Strood. That was apart from a noisey old hag from across the road, who after I turned down a night of sexual abandon with her (she was minging) started complaining about the cars. And then when no-one listened, she gave up. No-one complained when I lived in Sidcup (apart from my mum) and most of the people I lived with in North London and Hertfordshire were cool - with only a couple of snobby comments.
So no, you aren't alone. And don't get me started about the w@nkers that run English Heritage - I used to live in Lulworth, Dorset and they had an amazing take on what consitituted my property.... ar$eholes.
I just hope that where we're moving to (Weedon, nr Daventry) is more easy going....
