When i first started this rebuild this time last year (christ, its been a year already) my plan was to sort out the few bits of grot, chuck the volvo engine in and go and have some fun. The next pics should give you an idea of how easily these things spin out of control. Yes, its now getting bare metalled The reason for this is down to whoever painted it first time around. When i got the car it was on its second coat of paint, ford olympic blue and very nice it looked too. Trouble is that it never looked very straight, the lines were never very clearly defined and when i repainted it everywhere i rubbed through the old paint seemed to have filler behind it. Having started to strip it back to bare metal i've found that underneath that olympic blue is a coat of either very high build primer or sealer and it looks like it was put on with a trowel. Its got to be a couple of mm thick in places and once it was all taken off the difference is amazing. The panels look completley flat and arrow straight and all the lines are razor sharp and clearly defined. I wish i'd done this ages ago. In other news, i've finished off the sill and floorpan repairs and if i'd taken some tools with me saturday i could have lined up the doors and wings and welded in the front valance. This bit at the bottom of the A pillar had a total of four plates welded one on top of the other. By the tim i got back to the original panel it was just dust. Plus this lump welded in on the inside. This was what i ended up removing. Its all finished now but i forgot to take any pics of it.

Good work Rich! It's amazing how these things snowball isn't it? It'll be spot on when done though!

Got a bit more done tonight. This is the sill and A pillar all welded up. Had a small rust hole in the top of the sill which i cut out and repaired. Also had this rust bubble in the A pillar just behind the door hinge. I cut it out and treated the metal behind with some rust converter and a few coats of zinc primer then made up a repair. Little patches like this can be a pig make patterns for when you cant to the inside of them so i always use this method. First stick a bit of masking tape over the hole and give it a good wipe with a dirty finger so you can see the edge of the metal. Cut it out with a stanley blade. And you have a nice adhesive pattern which you can stick to your lump of scrap and cut around. Perfect fit. No filler needed

Another change of plan. My 16 valve head and stupid turbo are going to have to wait a while now. I've decieded to get the car running with the 8V for now and have some fun with it while i build a stupidly OTT engine. That way i'm less likley to loose enthusiasm and i'm hoping to have it on the road for the april trackday at marham. I've managed to make quite good progress over the last couple of weeks without really trying to hard. First off i spent pretty much a whole day fitting the doors, bonnet and wings back on and lining up all the panel gaps so i could refit the the front valance, then i cut a great big hole in it. Buy a lucky coincidence this hole is exactly the same size as my intercooler so it should allow a nice cool breeze in. Spurred on, i decieded to drop the engine back in and start working out how to plumb everything up. I need to make a couple of hoses up but nothing to bad. Next job will be to make an exhaust manifold then onto the joy of wiring it all up.

Time for another update. I've been squirting a bit of primer around for the last week or so, always a good sign that a project is on the home straight. Unfortunatley every now and then i think of what still needs to be done and i realise its not quite port and cigar time yet. Engine bay in primer. You can also see the engine mount brackets on the crossmember. I had these mocked up in 16 gauge for ages and everytime someone came and loked at the car the first thing they'd say was 'you'll have to make those engine mounts a bit stronger' ;D ;D Having the car in primer makes me appreciate how straight it is, something thats going to save a lot of time when it comes to paint. It took loads of filler and about two days work to get the front panel looking this good. Its going to take a whole lot more to get it ready for paint. The door handles seem to have fallen off somewhere along the line. Lucky i had enough filler to plug the holes up ;D I managed to pant half the floorpan tonight before the cold and the lack of coffee forced me to abort the mission.

still looks awesome, cant wait to see it finished what happened to the mk1 escy? I've still got the escort. I'll be finishing it once the cortina is done. It'll be getting another volvo engine, this time a 1.7 turbo from a 480 and the transaxle from a 340.
