4.2 Audi engine! That would be a very nice conversion. ;D Hopefully addressing the gasket problem should give you a good reliable VW engine. i have ordered the parts today, hopefully they will be here tomorrow; i have the inlaws here now and must escape into the workshop.... ;D

He he he.........Workshops make great 'bolt holes' don't they. ;D oh yes, and it was necessary today ... well, back to topic : both gaskets were leaking here ... the heads were easy to remove, because i used new bolts wherever i could and i also used bolts instead of studs ... pistons and liners look ok, though one liner came out with the head, so i have to pull all and replace the rubber gasket there, too ... heads looked ok .... this is the old gasket, you can see where it was damaged ... look at the valve clearance bolts, i think i have to replace them, too .... after cleaning the surface you see all the small holes (and stylish seventies ash tray in the background ;D ) the other head looks a bit better, but i have to find a way to fill those holes... a friend of me used some 2k metal glue to fill that... and it lasted, so maybe i'll go that way ... thermostat housing is cracked, too, didn't see that the last time ; i probably need new glasses ... ;D tomorrow i'll bring the heads to a specialist and see what he says ....

bought a ridicular dremel copy a couple of years ago and never had a use for it, until today : it was almost like being at a dentist .... and then it was time to fill it up... it comes from the states, the country of additives, that cure all engine deseases without opening the bonnet, so it must be good after application i took the heads out in the sun, we had a nice and warm day today .... tomorrow i'll be "skimming" the heads and collect the necessary parts and on thursday my mate comes around and helps me with the reinstallation of the heads ....

I'm keeping a close eye on this - My friends 2.1 t25 is dripping water from the left hand cylinder head, but we are expecting the studs to snap when we remove the head

The ones on this engine sounded like the sinking titanic when i untightened them ;D In case your bolts snap, i have a spare engine case over here .... Update: parts arrived, inlaws still here , more photos later ... (not of the inlaws)

Nice progress, this going to be coming to RRG10 or is the Passat making the trip it again this year? Good luck with the "skim" I always find that glue a pain to sand! Oh and you probably know this trick, but to get a great finish on a home skimmed head I always find a new knief shapening block and WD40 works wonders

Oh and you probably know this trick, but to get a great finish on a home skimmed head I always find a new knief shapening block and WD40 works wonders well it is planned to come over with this, but you never know whats happening until then Plan B would be the Passat, if anything with the Bus goes wrong... Passat is one of the most reliable cars i have ever had, almost boring .... though i have some plans for the Passat, too .... that WD 40 trick sounds interesting, i'll have a go with that. I could rebuilt the heads completely (new valves etc.) but i don't want to do that, i could find more trouble i was really tempted to buy new heads, but they were about 700 Euros , and i have no budget left for that kind of money at the moment. I am still unemployed and it might take a while to recover from my disease, so i must do that on a budget.... at the end of may i am also becoming a father, so it seems like the proper time spending days in the workshop are over

Wow you have had it rough over the last few months, sorry to hear that. But glad to hear you're getting better and in the workshop! Congratulations on becoming a father! Now is definately the time to be in the workshop, before changing engines becomes changing nappies!

today the postman rang twice : 170 € for a gasket kit, an air and fuel filter and two wiperblades, not so bad .... for the pricely sum of 30 Euros i bought those Hella Rallye 2000s... i wanted to fit them to the Passat, but they are bigger than i thought : i'll fit them, but the yellow ones might go onto the Passat .... back to the heads : a wire brush on a akku drill + WD40 = win ! thanks for the idea, Andy ! I didn't WD40 the area were i "welded" the holes, i have no idea, what WD40 does to that material, and the area where the liquid gasket sits shouldn't have any oil on it ... still some smaller areas, where i have to put that stuff on ... i actually did that, so it can harden over night, and we can fit the heads tomorrow ....

some more progress today : i didn't want to pull the wet liners, but as two were moving out when i took the heads off, we had to.... you normaly need a VAG only tool to get the cylinders back on the pistons; the space is very limited in the case. We didn't have the tool, but we could build one : it should work, we tried it at the old engine ... it worked, but it was a real pain... it took us the best part of two hours including killing two oil rings on the pistons, luckily i had the old engine here and could use the ones out of that ... the wet liners were usable : i didn't expect that .... after that we put on the new gasket .... applied some sealant , and put the heads back on....... we were so proud of our engineering skills, that we forgot to put in the pushrod tubes before we fitted the heads ... But hey, no problem, we had those telescopic tubes on the old engine: if i didn't have them, we should have taken of the heads off again ! but there is one slight problem : on the old engine there were 7 telescopic and 1 static tube fitted, so i have 7 telescopic and 9 static left now Well, i'll just order a telescopic one and thats it then... i can laugh about that now... i also need to order the adjusters for the valve clearance (though it has hydraulic lifters, you have to adjust them from time to time ...) and the thermostat housing... no hurry, i'll have the parts on saturday and then it might be up and running again.... i can resume, it is not really a hard job to change the gaskets, it just takes time .... big thanks to my mate Claudius, he has a lot of knowledge of the aircooled stuff and obviously more patience than i have ....

today came another parcel with parts, new thermostat housing, new pushrod tube and those adjuster bolts : nice , new and shiny.... i shouldn't put that in, that is art these are the adjuster bolts and the telscope pushrod tube... the bolts are not available as a spare part from VW, it came in a small bag with "mercedes" on it, so you can guess where it comes from... here the difference between old and new ... after some hassle with the exhaust i managed to get it fitting; i didn't change anything with the headers, but they just couldn't be fitted . With a ratchet strap i got them on, wonder how long it takes until the exhaust makes trouble ... after the inlaws went home yesterday (650 kms ;D ) and the wife was working in the flat, i could spend a couple of hours in the workshop; she is running now, though in limp mode, but she is running ! Tried to find the fault, after some googling i found out, that other people have the same problem after changing the gaskets and setting the valve clearances. So tomorrow i'll check the valves again, should be out of the workshop by afternoon.... ah yes, the engine is not leaking, neither oil or water ! so there is only one thing to do before going to the TÜV; i have a problem with the bearing for the steering wheel in the column; the steering wheel felt lose due to a worn bearing. I tried to get that bearing out, no chance. Then i tried the whole lock from a Passat, result. Obviously all VWs have the same, so a replacement is easy to find. Finished. Not . The steering locks immediately after turning the key off. This is a MOT fail de luxe, it shouldn't lock as long as the key is in.... so find another one tomorrow and try that.... thank god i start to stockpile used parts from all the cars i have

good news and bad news.... I received a secondhand steering column today, so that will be done tomorrow. I also adjusted the valve clearance again, so it is better now, but when the engine is hot, it is still running in limp mode I'll leave it a couple of days, and then will look at it again... i changed the oxygen sensor, repaired a few cables , it takes longer now until it is in limp mode, but it still goes. So the logic thing is : no matter what i throw parts at it, it does not run properly . So i got some vw original parts today : VW ketchup ... and "Currywurst" .... i could kill for that, TBH ;D no, that was not an accident, this is the final meal . Currywurst mit Pommes ;D that made my day .... and it works, the bus is still running in limp mode ....
