today the courier came and delivered the parts, so i could put the rubber parts back in... i tried to get them in with a vice ... but to my surprise i could push them in with my thumb... anyway, they are in .. now to the balljoints, it weren't the lower ball joints, luckily the upper balljoints are much easier to change; you don't need a press and not spring tensioner; that's a pretty straight forward job, so it didn't take long... i did both sides, so i don't have to touch that area for long time ... steering rack back in and off to the test center ... result ! The test was due in march, so they date it back, but that doesn't really matter... it is road legal again ... i ordered new plates, which should arrive tomorrow, then i can take off the season plates and have it registered for the full year... more to come some, obviously there will be a standard roof arriving soon... ;-)

The bus is still alive , though hibernating at the moment . But i have received a piece of metal for it : can you guess what it is yet ? a Blue Star donated the most important panel for my transporter : the roof. It might be a shame to break a Blue Star (it was a special edition at the end of production; complete Bluestars catch quite good money still), but the shell was dead . The last of the line transporters were built in Austria, where also the syncros were built, and metalwise they are worse than the earlier models . Also they were insulated with rock wool, which keeps the moisture and destroys the metal . An accident, where the frame was damaged made the decision easy.... and out came the grinder .... as soon as we have finished the 2.0l conversion on my mates bus i'll have a go at this one ... remove that camping conversion and replace the roof skin... only the middle part, but i'll explain that later why ....

Crikey Jurgen, I hadn't realised that the engine on this gave you sooo much hassle.... glad it was all sorted in the end. I'm with the others - i'd have thrown my toys out of the cot and left it in a corner why the change of roof again? Did I miss a major leak or something? Thought you wanted the pop-up sorted.... Best wishes for 2011 from Babette too of course. (she did say I better not want a workshop lmike yours or 'die Ludolfs' though ;D) John

(she did say I better not want a workshop lmike yours or 'die Ludolfs' though ;D) John thanks for the wishes, and she is almost right, my workshop is more "Die Ludolfs" rather than a clean, proper one. This is always on my list, and one day, i'll have a much cleaner workshop... i promise ;D well, i am fed up with that camper roof for a couple of reasons; first of all, though it says, that it is a Westfalia, it isn't . I bought this sticker on ebay to have no trouble by the TUV, as the manufacturer of that roof has gone out of business long before and no more paperwork exists ... it is not really nice to drive, as it makes the shed-like aerodynamics even worse, and when there is wind or storm, it feels like an oil tanker ... i think, if i fit a normal roof skin and some clever designed cupboards, it will be a useful conversion. We weren't using the roof anyway, it was just there to close the hole the older, uglier roof. So stay tuned....

well, it is not spring yet, but i need the transporter for various transport related things, so i went to the registration office and re-registered it. I had to buy new plates, as i am not using those seasonal plates anymore, so some standard plates were bought over the internet ... first drive today was to the skip, as i have some things to get rid of... i had a couple of problems in the past with the oil pressure buzzer , i thought it was the instrument cluster , as i fitted a very basic one (even without a clock, not to mention a rev meter...) and the problem was cured... i received a very good instrument cluster from Polardego a couple of weeks ago, so i fitted this ... and the buzzer went on again I just thought about digging a huge hole in the garden, but had a closer look at the sensors again : shonky pic, but you can see what happened : the connector looked ok, but the wire fell off, as soon as i touched it ... put it together with some other connectors and the buzzer is out . Result ;D Now the temperature gauge is not working anymore But, doesn't matter at the moment, here some pics i made today : you probably see the brackets for the fog lamps, i had two really big ones in the transporter, i took them out today and one fell on the floor...don't ask... ;D anyway, i still love it, whatever breaks next... now time to get rid of that roof, i am thinking about painting the upper section (which is white now) and the roof in a dark grey when the roof skin is in ...

another small update; I bought a couple of Hella Rallye 2000 spotlights, time to fit them, before they get broken in the workshop... that was the idea... Plan B: get replacements, fit them, before they can fall on the floor ... I got some replacements from a mate, though they were not chromed, but black.. anyway : much better, as they are bigger than the old ones : also refitted the smaller foglamps , not sure about them, they are too small ... well, as mentioned in the previous post, I replaced some more connectors from the engine loom and we have full power now After I replaced the spark plug from cylinder one : the plugs have been driven maybe 1000 kms, on the right plug from cyl 3 ... that looks like trouble again ....

Just caught up with this. Looks great. Changing the roof will make a huge difference I think. It'll certainly look a lot better Looks a bit like my old panel, I'll have to dig out a pic.

It'll certainly look a lot better Looks a bit like my old panel, I'll have to dig out a pic. thanks, changing the roof is now delayed to next year, different plans. As i am sure, welding up the hole will make a mess out of the roof skin, i'll go for Plan B. Plan b is a new camping roof, there is one company over here still offering them new, next year i'll buy one of those. There is one good thing about it, the roof is not high when closed, add 10cms to the roof gutters and that's it. That means the same space inside when opened, but much better driving in windy conditions. The roof also has TÜV , so one problem less in the future... hmm, no roof mounting, what can we do instead ? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the annual engine out exercise ;D a couple of weeks ago i wanted to take the Bus to a show, almost on the way i noticed that the engine wasn't running very smooth. This and the 2 mile long oil trace on the road made me cancel the show.... no time yet to take the heads of the engine, but looking at the spark plug from cylinder one and the huge oil consumption makes me think of a problem with a piston/liner of that cylinder. Plan now is, take of the heads, liners and pistons and check them. If there is no further damage to the crankcase/crankshaft, i'll buy a set of pisstons/liners from the 112 BHP engine (this is a 95 BHP engine with catalytic converter and lower compression) and put it back together. If everything is dead , i'll go for something else...

today i had the chance to take the engine apart , took a while to get in on the engine stand alone : exhaust off : on the plus side it is not too bad, when all the bolts open easily ... ;D that is a good explanation for the loss of power well well ... valve seat is ok, valve guides look good, too... pistons also look good, i was hoping to find the reason for the huge oil consumption ... wet liners also look ok, now where does the pressure in the crankcase come from ? On its last journey i set a nice oil trail through town, so it blew some gaskets, but i can't explain this from a damaged exhaust valve ? tomorrow i'll split the case and have a look at the crankshaft and the bearings; then we will see if/how the engine is repaired ....

Nightmare Mr J, this is why I'm sticking a Subaru lump in mine! Mine is a 12000km engine but it has an intermittent fault where it cuts out randomly! Rather than keep messing about and replacing stuff (which apparently the previous owner already did) it's going! 165 Bhp as well, and (Maybe) better fuel consumption! We'll see. Got to sort the rust first

well, after searching for a replacement engine for a couple of weeks and not finding something suitable i lost a bit of mojo on this van. You get engines which were stored two years in a barn with parts missing for 500 €s , which you can add all parts that need to be replaced on top, added with a little shortage of money and some bad news in the real life ; the van is still registered, taxed and insured and costs money each day as a garden ornament... meanwhile i am doing this conversion for a friend : retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=92564in a short story : Diesel engine out, 2.0l inline Golf engine in, and now a VR6 in... during the conversion we were stockpiling all the parts which weren't needed for the VR6 conversion ; engine mounts, Diesel gearbox bellhousing, wiring loom etc.... now we struck a deal, which is very good and that 2,0l engine will go into my van ; it is almost plug and play, the only thing i will change might be the airfilter and the exhaust, too loud for my taste .... as soon as the VR6 conversion is finished, i'll start on the red van again....

VR6 is gone now (see other thread),and most of the other cars here have been repaired, so time to start doing something here : for the inline 4 engine i have to change the bellhousing from Boxer to Diesel ; time to drain the gearbox oil . VW says, there is no need to change the oil, as they didn't expect to last those things 25 years+ ; i repalced the oil 5 years ago, it was like new when i drained it, wouldn't have been necessary really , but now it's gone anyway... bye bye boxer bellhousing ... this is the driveshaft of the gear box .... it is bolted to the inner driveshaft, fixed with the sleeve and secured by the ring... that's it out ... Diesel driveshaft is the short one below.... and in ... Diesel bellhousing fitted ... ready to connect it to the engine , but as i was alone, i couldn't do that, maybe tomorrow.

found my stepfather helping me with putting the engine to the box : secured it with a ratchet strap on that table., reminds me that I have to add some wheels to the table ... power steering pump and brackets are not needed, as I don't have power steering and I am not planning to fit one ... so off with everything which is not needed ... with a bit of pushing forward, left and right it went in ... lots of space here, so I can fit a proper air filter, we are planning to add a plastic tube from the left side of the engine to the other side... I want to use my old generator, because the rev-meter gets its signal from the generator; I hope that will work, as I have to change the pulley .... and I might have to repaint the valve cover ;D tomorrow we'll do the electrics and the water hoses .... then on monday fuel lines, throttle cable and air filter ...
