Sh*t me! It's an update!!1!one! K70 didn't look too bad, did it? However as per usual with 70s cars, that shiny paint hid a multitude of sins Luckily, it wasn't as bad as it looked. These rust bits were soon dealt with, and now the car awaits paint. However, I decided to be thorough and strip it as a precaution... A good job I did too - found out the floorpans were coated with FIBREGLASS - peeled this away to reveal some chassis rot...So, now I've gotta learn to weld as well! But, learn I shall, cos I ain't letting this car die!! Interior was pulled out... ...and the not-needing-treatment bits were sealed... The worst of the corrosion was in the front footwells... But, as with most rot, doesn't look so bad after a going over with the ol angle grinder... Incidentally, here's a chunk of the damn stuff that was covering the rust up... I'm waaaaaaay behind schedule with this (new deadline is Dubfreeze 2007!) but I don't care - I'm saving this one no matter what!

AAAAGH! It's a zombie thread, back from the murky mists of 2006 to wreak its revenge on people. For whatever reason. Oh hang on, no it isn't, it's just Samage updating after 3 FRIGGIN YEARS. Life's gotten in the way, along with apathy, and the K70 has simply sat in the garden doing nothing. Bug is still my daily driver, and has its own thread now. A couple of weeks ago I decided out of the blue to buy a new battery for the K70 and see if it would start. To my amazement, it did! First try! Not running very well, although I put that down mostly to 3 year old petrol... So, having been asked yet again to display the car at the NEC Classic Motorshow in November, I've decided to go all out and try and get it done. 12th November (set up day) is an almost unreachable deadline, but dammit I'm gonna try! K70-geddon officially commences now!! We begin our tale where we left off in the murky mists of 2006, with the car basically stripped of its interior and trim. I decided to stop pussyfooting around and attack the bubbles that were concerning me, with a suitably large grinding wheel. To my surprise, the entire end of one sill just shattered on contact! Hmm, rust flakes inside: Underside of the same sill: Rear floor: Jacking point: (worth noting that the actual jacking point itself is still servicable and still holds the car's weight - I tried it! it's the surrounding metal that's gone all crispy!) Decided the only thing for it was to whip the whole outer sill off. So... Inner sill's gone a bit at this end, but it's solid the rest of the way along... Chop chop! If you think it looks like there's more than one outer sill, you'd be right. This is because the car's got 3 of them on this side. It's not some triple-skinned thing either, it's just panels being boshed over rotten panels. Part of the middle outer sill. The innermost one was pretty much reduced to rust flakes: This merged mess of two of the sills I didn't even need the grinder to remove, just banged it off with a hammer: Ugh. The same end you saw earlier: A bead of Isopon which was holding the outermost of the three sill panels on! And how it looked at the close of play today (when my cutting disc had been reduced to the size of a 50p  ) Everything I removed today. On the left is the outermost of the three outer sills, the two long thin bits are the middle one, and the innermost is in the dustpan. Tomorrow afternoon, it's time to cut along the bottom of the inner sill to remove the rest of the crud, and then start mocking up the repair sections.

Don't ya just love "period" bodges!? I'm always amazed that lobbing in a load of glassfibre or plod was perfectly acceptable 20 or 30 years ago by a lot of people! Looking through the photos, I felt lots of sympathy - it starts of with a few pokes and scrapes of the screwdriver, but once you start digging you end up with a whole load of work to do! ;D I feel you pain. Still, gonna be ace (and solid!) when done. Get in there!

If it was me once the welding's done, whip the two after market foglights off, convert one of the rear reverse lights to fog. Keep the rear nice and tidy, less to scrape when it gets low

Right then, today's shenanigans... As previously stated, I went along the bottom of the inner sill today and took off the remainer of the really bad stuff... ... which left the underside looking like this.... Here's the metric ton of wet, flaky metal I took off: The inner sill has a few crusty bits: I began to square these off ready for new metal: And then I stopped due to a sharp pain in my eye, so I didn't get to mock up an repair sections as planned. The pain didn't go away and I went to hospital later in the evening, turns out despite wearing goggles I'd managed to get underseal and metal shrapnel in my right eye! Had it scraped out with a scary needle and need to wear an eyepatch til tomorrow. So, am I going to have a rest for a day or two? Nope, ain't gonna get to the NEC that way. Off to get some snugger-fitting goggles tomorrow, then get right back on it!

Definite deja-vu going on here. Looks like a VW version of my old Trump (and the same bas**rd bodging it with the fibreglass too). I ended up with the shrapnel injury as well...... annoyingly irritating isn't it! It's a cool looking car - forgotten they even existed!
Good luck - gonna be a stunner - you keeping the blue?

Must say that I'm surprised how futuristic the dashboard looks! It wouldn't look mismatched if it were installed in a car from this millenium! Wonder what a K70 would look like on Porsche Fuchs rims? Would maybe fit quite well, look-wise...

GTVSaviour: Yep, I'm, keeping the blue. Tis VW Marathon Blue metallic, and a rather fetching colour it is too. volvo544: Fuchs have been done on these before, and they look great! See: Love that car. Now let's get back to a K70 which isn't so stunning.... Turns out I DID have a rest for a day because my eye really was stinging the day after having the metal removed. I used that day to order a full-face visor from the internets. I'd been advised they provided superior protection to goggles: So with my sight safeguarded, I cracked out the grinder and carried on. Today's job was a boring but important one: I removed the edges left when taking the outer sill(s) off. This makes it easier to attach new metal later on: Today's sacrifice to the rust gods: I also began squaring off more of the frilly bits on the inner sill ready for little repair sections: But wait, what's that in the background? Looks like the inside of the car... Ah. It is. Seems the sides of the floor need some new metal before I can proceed with the sills, I'm supposed to be welding to that bit!
