how about... having the rear engine, outside? By that I mean a boot rather than an hatch, so your rear qtr windows are outside on both sides like a lancia beta thing, shutting off the back like a pick up truck with a nice piece of fitted glass or fire proof poly, and your firewall bulkhead thingy, that way your engine, only interfears with warming the backs of rear seats and making noise. so fumes should be away from the cabin all the time.
Think about an MR2 for my idea...
(if i'm told correct cold air comes from underneatha nd out of vents at top, swept and sucked out by air flowing over the roof and down, radiator is at front, cooled as normal)
you could still use the rear qtrs for cooling, (i think thats one of my fave features) either like a beetle intake, or a big lairy scoop if ya must!
so to cover the engine bay for aesthetics you could go for a boot in a hatch shape, like the MR2 a bit with the escort sides, or get a poly breathable cover
as for the rear rad, that could be under the boot ducted, or on the boot lid (mentioned before) you could put the second one upfront aswell, somehow, it would help with weighting too but all that piping on the MR2 annoys me, it shouldnt but it does, bloody long pipes! ;D
