Very impressive build on the Civic. Utterly bemused by the responses on SWdubs, after all they're the first to bang on about how 'original' and 'open minded' they are - quite a few loved it, a few were rather reactionary and narrow minded. [As it was pointed out] had the 5 been a dropped MK 1 or breadvan the same naysayers would be fapping all over it. Another dubber (with the right idea IMHO) said the car was a laugh.....spot on. *continues to struggle to understand the mentality of some of the VW lads who are undermined by an elitist minority* *prepares MK1 Mondeo spotting thread in earnest*

great work must be ace to work in a warm garage with the shell on a rotisary It must be a really good mojo grower than being laid on wet tarmac with the wind blowing your welding gas everywhere :B

LOL at the VW 'scene tax' boys getting there knickers in a twist...
The same guys that will pay £2k for a set of BBS Split Rim alloys...
Suppose I used to be one of them, but realised that there is more to life than VW's...I love my Splitty and will never sell it, I love my Golf and I will never sell it...But I don't see the point in being a petrolhead and not experiencing all the other types of cars out there..It's very narrow minded IMHO....

So glad this has resurfaced! Love the pic in your banner and those wheelarches are inspired! I do despair a little at the vw comments! but as dubbedup says "I don't see the point in being a petrolhead and not experiencing all the other types of cars out there.." Can't wait to see this progress! Might have to change my 'most looked forward to car in 2009' nomination!!

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

When the weld has hardened it just blunts the flap discs, that's what I started with, 40s and 60s, no wear, just blunts them. Parmenion_ - This is nice but where's yer readers ride thread? C'mon, show the world!

Planned to spend the whole weekend welding but having a Datsun to play with distracted me slightly Decided to start work on the N/S sill, I'd forgotten that the step section above was as bad as it was, so repairing that took priority as I want it to stay put when I cut the sill off. Lets see what we're dealing with first, Nitromors on Scrape the majority off and a quick once over with the knot wheel reveals............ Cut a section of rust out Forget to take pictures until after I'd painted it Tackle the corner round the door switch next I don't plan to have an interior light so that'll make things easier Another section out Magnets to hold the patch in place More progress would have been made, however, after being ill over the weekend our cat, Dave, died of kidney failure aged only 3 1/2 Gutted doesn't even start to describe it, RIP Dave we'll miss you Even he liked the Civic, edit - sometime in the past couple of weeks I also did this, only a sneaky peek for now though, Mk1 Golf arch on a Civic ;D

Gutted for you losing Dave, Ian.
Been a long while since I kept friends pets, but remember the ones I lost over the years.
Back to the car, and your work.
Once agin I have to say that you really are very good.

Once more excellent skillzorz...... good to see the sneak preview too - seems right at home. Commiserations on the premature demise of your workshop mascot (they all seem to end up in there - it's a real force of nature)
Looking forward to the next 'this is how your welding SHOULD look' update.

Aye caramba, I love a good weld fest, and this is up there with the best of them (Slaters Metro subframe mountings, 'That' Citroen DS...) This sort of thing reminds me how lousy a metal basher I am! Inspiring stuff.

Awesome build so far! I'm a hardcore Vw lover, but man! I love the mk1 golf fenders on it. I can't wait to see all 4 arches welded on and hugging the wheels. And I totally agree this! This is why I use Retro Rides, generally speaking anything goes and diversity is celebrated not frowned upon! VIA LA RETRO RIDES.
