:)GOLF HISTORY X I got this car last March, almost by chance, when I wasn't really looking, yet at the same time thought about doing a "run it rough/ salt flat look" cheap Golf. The criteria was: it had to be cheap, a 1.3, a 3door with non-tinted glass, no sunroof or metallic paint, but it had to be either white or a very dark blue/ black. Red wasn't really thought about until this car turned up one day. It was advertised as a 5door so I never paid it immediate attention until I had a closer look. GOOD GOD!!!!!!!! NOT only did tick ALL the boxes, it was left hand drive (which I have a strange fascination for) and had a chrome-edged grille and no side repeaters, hadn't by the pics, benn dicked about with and looked all original, hell, even the paint was matt through lack of care. I got it. ] I picked it up after buying it unseen, drove it back home after putting loads of air in all the tyres and changing a wiperblade, gave it a good scrub as it had been sitting under trees in a yard for who knows how long, as it was all green with moss etc on the roof and drivers side. One CV boot later and some fiddling with a broken wire to the numberplate light (one side only) it had a new MOT. It may have cost just under 16,000DM when new, but it looked every bit the few hundred pound beater now. It found itself smacked with the lowering stick directly after the MoT and now wore some et20 ATS Cups via a friend who sold me them from his newly acquired Recaro-clad Jetta 16v. I ran it for a few months until another friend took my ATS wheels for his 20Vt Golf Cabrio so I ran it slow and low on the original 13s and now closer to the deck via coilovers, which didn't help it on the supposedly-and formerly known as Camping Area at Satan Pod in July. It continued to be used daily as well as for numerous trips up and down the country to collect parts, go to VW Action and help develop ideas for what it will become one day. It is currently looking more like this: ...watch this space........

GOLF HISTORY X The idea of the SaltFlat-look was originally intended for a navy car, and to run the car with faded and worn paint, the stance being a bit nose down and have all the usual stickers such as Mallory, Clay Smith, Hoosier, Champion etc and probably have some kind of fake timing or category label/markings. The interior would have been a bit of a rats-nest and very minimal. The wheels would have probably been steels and salt flat discs and that was all good and well until this car proved to be a bit too good and more of a keeper and restoration project rather than a cheap old nail daily while I was thinking of turbo-ing my '78 Polo. I got offered a good amount for my Polo (yes I do sometimes get loads of stick for selling it and regret that move occassionally) but I never really felt happy with it still looking like the previous owners' car. Plus the fact I really dislike ATS Classics and seemingly ALL lowered Polos 1, 2 and 3 run them, its almost a default setting for them? A bit like Golfs on BBS crosswires of any type, it was all a bit samey. The gradual diminishing enthusiasm I had for the current VW watercooled "scene" was wearing my patience thin, but at the same time, enthusiasm for my roots starting with old Citroens and VW aircoolers and the buzz of old events such as VW Action, the late '80s Bug Jams and Stonor Park, I found myself reaching for the next shelf down and re-discovering VolksWorld, a chance copy of Ultra and the memories of VW Trends, Super VW etc, the enthusiasm was returning. Now painted and polished 'bays are something, but it seems all the 20Vt gold-plated, £2K BBS split-rim and full-leather trims of seemingly ALL big-bumpered Golf2s on the show circuit have bored me senseless. Rat-look wasn't an option. To ruin a perfectly good car in favour of a minor fashion is nonsense. I had strayed further along the shelf at the local petrol-station to find Ol Skool Rodz, the French magazine Kustom Deluxe (I found whilst on my honeymoon in France) and another mag called "Ode To Old School" Street Rod (or something like that?). My magazine collection now resembles its own very own small wannabe shelf in the local petrol-station, for petrol heads and non-biased ones at that! I also have copies of Back Street Heroes among my increasing library, that I would drive around with and read or flick through during my lunch breaks out in the car park at work. At VW Action in August 2007, surrounded by all the air-cooled cars, a few water-coolers were present, this year I wouldn't be at Edition 38. Using the old tried and tested measure tape and spending hours in the local scrapyards, ideas came to fruition and a project would be borne of this. Some ideas from years previous were dusted off and thought about in the best way of how to put them into good usage too. I remember joking and chatting away to the guy I bought my first GTI from when I bought it all those years back, as we both came from the aircooled Dubs in our former years, I mentioned how basic the '84 GTI was, and with the right colour and parts added or subtracted, it could be more like an 1200 Beetle, if only it had clear glass all round, a beige paintjob and vinyl basketweave seats without headrests. As the car had no side repeaters or rubbing strips, by using aslo steel wheels with hubcaps and reverting to orange indicator lenses to make less appealing, it would go against the grain of the then fashionable big bumpers and splitrim single headlamp, mono wiper GTIs that would give the 17" rimmed Brit-look it name and face. The lack of money and time to waste on such a silly idea meant it was a non-runner. Two years passed when a certain magazine featured a beige gold-plated Oettinger motored 16V from the continent. It had quarterlights, clear glass and even stranger and very against the grain, a wicker interior! People didnt know what the hell to say or think. I do remember my friend dave he remembered the day we talked of such lunacy. I kicked myself, as some of those ideas were the very same I had thought of 2 years before. Then some ideas are best kept for other projects, some work fittingly well with with the most unlikey cars. It seemed that "thinking outside the box" would be the key and boundaries breached in order to create a car that will be truly unique. Influences from the Golf world were ground-breakers such as Mike McCoy's beautiful Dark Aubergine Jetta2, Ali Zaii's silver or Amulet red Golf2, the mighty silver Golf1 of Marco Haeger and Martin Neuhauser's beige gold-plated Oettinger-engined Golf2. Custom street rod influences from Foose, Coddington and by far moreimpressive to me, creations by Jimmy Shine. The owner builds move me more than cheque-book cars, so all the unsung heroes that you see in the car parks and small uncredited photos of unique cars, I think of you too, almost more so than the big boys featured in the mags. Influences from the scooter world, namely the Lambretta called "Spiritwalker" bikes, cycles, trucks and all others have made impressions on what could and can be created. It doesn't have to belong to be cool, but its the way you use it that makes it stand out to someone out there.

GOLF HISTORY X
They seemed to confuse loads of people at GTI Festival back in July '07. All they were are et20 ATS Cups powdercoated in silver instead of having the black detailing and polished outer edges.

GOLF HISTORY X
The influence of old school anything and custom/street rod/ hot rod/ gasser/ and anything other than VW watercoolers have lead me to style my car in the way it will be. You guessed I'm not letting any secrets out just yet, but poaching from other styles will be heavy. Think minimal and old-themed. I've used ideas ranging from the 1940s- thru all decades until about the '90s. Wheel and tyre choice, lack of external accessories and paint tone have been considered. An original idea was to run banded steel arches with matching banded steel rims. The colour choice would be Audi Amulet Red. Chrome to be minimal. The search of a year for some parts and good leads from really great people, contacts seemingly worldwide and lots of useful advice. The best thing I did was to do loads of research, a truck load of emails to people in lots of different places, nations and walks of life. Knowledge of crossover parts from similar parts bins and writing everything down. Always have that parts list with you, as when you get to the parts counter, chances are you won't remember what you went in for nd buy loads of bits you didnt really need yet, or ever.

GOLF HISTORY X
I found by looking at the way other cars are built and if you built it, what would you change? Some details could be better thought out and or look better. By not being narrow minded and seeing further than your own nose, other possibilties are there to be utilised. '32 era Fords have given me ideas i'm gonna be using, the VW Transporter some others.
