Hmm, a diesel metro, I think we can rule aut the banger boys pretty quick. Obviously someone who values economy over speed or style.

Metro's were woefully easy cars to steal, I used to see heaps of them dumped on the Downs burnt out without ignition barrels.
As the case may be for this car, it was mostly bored pre-asbo kids responsible for the demise of mk1 and 2 Metros.

This ones got the immobiliser and alarm on though, they're very very hard to steal unless you have the key fob to turn the alarm/immobiliser off. Its built into the ECU, I'm not sure if theres an easy way around it. Obviously professional Rover 100 thieves.

My mates nasty diesel mk4 Escort was nicked twice in one night. Once from outside his house and then next from the retail park where the cops found it, mere hours later.

Back in the day (late 80's/early 90's) my ex's brother had a yellow 4 door mk1 escort that was repeatedly stolen. It was tolen and dumped in some woods the police found it and informed Paul when he got there it had been nicked again. I think in total it was nicked about 6 times while under his ownership!!
