i can remember my uncle telling me a trick he used to do (and i assume many others have too) with older cars to make the sills last longer, i cant remember exactly what he said or if anything else is needed, anyway here goes:
park car on level surface. weld over any non factory holes that the sill has accumulated! find a suitable screw for sill drain hole and screw in to drain hole. drill hole in top of sill large enough to fit in a small funnell. get the tub of used engine oil that you drained out last time you serviced it and pour (thru gauze) into funnell until sill full. rock car for a while to ensure that oil covers all internals of sill. drain and repeat on other sill!
nb i am not resonsible for big blotches of oil on peoples drives - do not attempt if you are unsure/car has sills with holes in etc! - i have never done this myself! try at your own risk! not my fault etc!
would like to know if anyone has ever done this or similar sill work? and to what cars? or was my uncle pulling my leg?

It does work but you have to be careful that the sill is compleatly oil tight. I know a friend who tried it and after pouring in about 10 litres of oil realised it was going straight through the sill into the footwell. Even after a thorough clean out and a new carpet it still smelt like a breakers yard in there.

*cofff WAXOYL cofff* it don't smell half as bad as old engine oil, and yes I know it costs more than used engine oil

I've heard that trick, and there's no reason why it shouldn't work! However, I'd rather have to clean off WaxOyl than old 20/50 should it go somewhere it isn't supposed to any day! (smells better for a start! )

my uncle used to do that to his lorrys. It works but they used to curse word oil out everywhere as you coudlent relly get them oil tight and there was allways a small amount left in after you drain it. Didnt matter on a truck but not the kind of thing you want on a road car.

Years ago,i ran a garage in the north of New Zealand, where you could drive on the beach.Almost every day someone would come in to get their car sprayed under neath with old oil.The trick is to spray it,it drips for a bit then the residue stays put.i just used a cleaning gun ,like you buy anywhere, like your machinery mart. It roots any rubber bushes and brake hoses and if i did it today in brissy, the EPA would have my tennis balls. I had to do a engine job on a Jag Mk 1 ,which required dropping the 2.4 out the bottom.Well this thing had been regularly sprayed for 18 years ,but was rust free, pretty good for a jag parked by the ocean. But it was also one of the sh**tiest cars i've ever worked on. everything was covered in a layer of grease and road dirt about a 1/2" thick. ....But no rust though ;D ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Sounds a bit environmentally suspect to me, might put me in breach of the Kyoto Protocol. I’ll just stick to the tried and trusted method of dealing with rust by doing absolutely nothing, then embarking on a mega weld-fest when the car has rotted to hell. (again).

you mean just putting primer on top of rust doesn't work? ;D i reckon waxoyl is a better bet, doesn't that set hard? i'd hate for all the oil to spill out the back of the sill during acceleration straight onto the back tyres...

hmm probarbly do better having drain hole at one end then and putting car on ramps? waxoyl never thought of putting that stuff in sills! gud for spraying underbody tho so old engine oil seems to work well for sills then? may try it with the aunts A60 - if the sills aint too bad aint had a proper look at the thing in years lol has been stood in garage since at least 87! (when its recon engine and box blew a halfshaft) have wolsely 16/60 axle to fit too
