Avoid the V4 like the plague. Heavy and underpowered. Saab used the Ford V4 but I think the Saab's was 1600cc (I could be wrong) as opposed to Ford's 1700 or 2000. Still wibblepoo.
Every engine under the sun has been fitted in the Pop before now so the world's your lobster. I'd go for a Ford V6, probably a Cologne 2.8 or 2.9. Still heavy but torquey and compact. Cheap and readily available plus parts are easy to get.

Yeah, ive also considerd the V6, still a possible option.
So, what exactly is wrong with the V4, no-one likes em. How heavy, how underpowered. Forgetting those facts, whats it actually like?
A small part of me wants to do it just because there so disliked.

Don't like stretched tyres, very low profile tyres & I think a car CAN be too low. Perhaps I'm odd.

how about a Ford 1700cc straight 4? Keeps it both period and 'in the family'? They are suprisingly nippy. Found in Mk2 Consul & Mk3 Zephyr 4

Lets see if I’ve got this right – you want to keep the front beam (sensible move as a disc brake conversion is not that difficult).
In that case I’d ditch the idea of a Ford V6, they make nice boat anchors but are way too heavy and will screw up the handling. The V4 would go in the bin too (1500 German built version used by Saab), they have a bad reputation because the shaft that drives the oil pump and the distributor off the cam has a nasty habit of dropping into the sump, not good for the engine!
You said you’d either use a Sidevalve or a more modern motor. Probably teaching you to suck eggs here but ditching the Sidevalve also involves ditching the gearbox, torque-tube and back axle too. Making an adaptor to bolt say a V4 or Pinto to the original 3-speed would be a waste of effort as it just wouldn’t handle the extra power for very long.
If you wanted to stick with a Sidevalve engine then a 100E lump would be a good starting point as they have adjustable tappets unlike the 103E engine, they also have a water pump built in which is handy. Years ago Belchers used to do a 1400cc conversion on the 100E engine. They converted it to shell bearings and bored it out to 1400cc, can’t remember what pistons they used, may have been Mk1 Consul ones.
BMC A-series, in 1275 form would be interesting, they fit nicely in a Model-Y so would do the same in a Pop. How about one with a Shorrocks blower on it – mucho grin factor! ;D Buy a rotted out Midget and use engine, gearbox and back axle.
Alternatively buy a rotted out MX5 and use the running gear from that.

I'm liking the red block Volvo option, the old pushrod B20 would look great in there, nice and large, the smaller but basically identical looking version was in production at the start of the 50's, so the perios styling was right, and Volvo made hot up kits including using twin webbers I think to boost power to 150bhp or so

What about Vauxhall OHC 2.3 liter? Strong ,powerful and really different!. Might be a bit rare today i guess but as they have huge mains etc they take a real hammering and theres tons of scope for tuning in the future. I put a Chev 283 into a Anglia once and used the stock front i beam ( as used in dozens of dragsters in the US years ago.) with 100E drums... ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) . my second effort with one of those involved Cortina discs .I cut the Anglia stubs off and welded cut down cortina stubs to the king pin boss ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) . I would guess that the engine and it's various options must be easy to dig up in the UK,along with a 4 speed,it's drive shaft and maybe a Vuaxhall viva or Chevette diff. ![](http://www.droopsnoot.co.uk/Photos/Gallery019.jpg)

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Lexus V8 4.0 32v, looks nice, dead cheap, easy to rig up too. £300 will get you one with a slush box. It'll never ever go wrong! As found in LS400's & Soarer's Nice idea but more power than i'd need, prob be too expensive to run (although ina light little car it could be ok. Any idea what they weigh? Weight is an issue on the stock front beam. Probably the lightest V8 you'll find, all alloy engine, 260bhp stock but they are super efficient. I have had several in various Lexi & they all do 25mpg plug in 2 ton cars. You'll easily get more than that. ECU/engine/gearbox loom is a single package, just wire in a couple of power supplies & relays & off you go. 8 wires will make them run. Very popular with the nitro drag boys in the US too.

I know of a pop running a big block and using the stock front beam! The one I'm building has a rover v8 and stock beam, but with split wishbones from the back axle and spring over axle perches and a new reversed eye spring stack both from speedway motors via valley gas.

Any pics of your suspension set up? Thanks for all the info, never even thought about MX5. Blown A series would be superb. Ive been thinking more about the crossflow. For the same money as building a decent sidevalve i could fit a 1600, 4 speed box, new axle and hydrauilic brakes. I guess ive got at least a few months to come up with a plan. I like the sidevalve option as i can build one then just swap it in, anything else requires a much longer 'off the road' period.

Have a look here www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1879.0This is the build of the pop hot rod we are building, there are pics of the suspension bits on page 37 but none of it all together yet as we are waiting for some bits to be machined. I think the easiest complete swap would be a crossflow, but it is a bit predictable. Hope this helps.

IIRC Bodieanddoyle had a 1.8 BMW powered prefect... BOOM! ![](http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d171/arthurdaley/prefect/in.jpg) and its still about! currently £2500 (£1600 more than i sold it for!!) in the back of custom car. one car I'd really rather build again than own again, so much of it I still feel was complete to$$ when I done it way back when. I was only 19/20 at the time tho ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) sorry for the in-build pic, but it was already in my p-bucket ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

did you ever get it driving? Looks cool! hell yes! had it on the road for about 18 months. very scary experience as it had- a) no weight to speak of b) was very high sided and moved easily between lanes in crosswinds. see also reason a. c) was visciously over servo'd with a pedal stroke of about 1" in total. d) was ballistic off the lights due to a 1.6 capri back end. e) it had no seatbelts and had wooden floors. f) unboxed chassis although it was well braced TBH g) the suspension hardly moved, not good when it was this high- ![](http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d171/arthurdaley/prefect/finished.jpg) good fun and cost sod all in the long run. learnt a lot too. mainly learnt not build hotrods ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
