Just doing a few jobs on the BMW and I noticed this Is it just sound deadening or is it heat related? If it needs to be there is there something easy/more modern/more effective I can replace it with? All ideas appreciated

Stick some of that green imitation grass they use in butchers' shops on there. Add some sausages/pork chops for a tasty trackday BBQ. ;D

What they all mean is - take it out and clean it off, you'll be fine!

Dynamat and other brands do "Underhood insulation" which is similar but better than the hair stuff. The hair stuff can fall off in lcumps down your carb and block it up... Meh. Even if it doesn't it seems to be always full of dirt and stuff which falls in your hair or into the carb. gittish stuff. The dynamat is nice and shiny too (aluminimum or similar backing is used)

Just look up a Motor trimmer wholesale supplier in the yellow pages or google and buy a under-hood mat. it comes in a large square. you just cut it to shape with scissors then peel off the white plastic and stick it on a like a giant band-aid. It helps protect the bonnet paint from engine heat and keeps noise down.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Metallic 6 cylinder 5 series sometimes seem to burn their bonnet paint if the foam stuff is missing
