Sorry the image is blurry, but You can see the head of the bolt there, its been scraped along the road a few too many times now, and the head has become a bit thin, Ive bought a new bolt but I'm in a bit of a quandary as to how I get this one out, because of the radius on the ring part of a spanner (or socket), I cant actually get any purchase on whats left of the bolt, its torqued up quite tight (well, it should be). The only thing I can think of is to shave a spanner down so it grips as well as it possibly can, then weld it on to the bolthead, but if I still cant get it out, its going to mean I have to drive about with a 17mm spanner welded to the bottom of the car. The bolt is about 140mm long, and holds the front suspesion on. Any better ideas than mine? I'm open to any help or suggestions I can get, ta in advance!

Weld a nut on to the bolt head?
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I had considered that, but Id have thought it'd be tricky to get a decent weld inside a nut to hold bearing in mind how tight it is, although, i guess, if i did it with a big enough nut (22mm maybe)the hole would be big enough to get a decent weld in it..
I might try that first, before sacrificing a spanner. (ta)

Drill it out carefully so as not to damage the thread too much. Then clean the thread up and just re thread the hole if you make a balls up of it.

I get over speedbumps like this. *shrug*, worn holes in both front shocks, exhaust is flat at the bottom, both spring cans are much the same, but, at the end of the day, it looks cool as heck!

I don't do speed bumps in 'low mode'. In fact I don't do cats eyes really.

Removal off stubborn and rounded screws are usually carried out in four easy steps.
1. Round the bolt head even more using lots of penetrating oil and that rusted pair of universal pliers that the last owner left in the engine bay.
2. Weld something to it, have the weld break about 4 times before starting to curse the day you bought the cheapest flux core welder you found.
3. Grind the dissfigured metal object that once was a bolt head and drill a hole in it for the screw extractor worth more than the car. Snap the screw extractor. Cry.
4. Drill out the bolt. Depending on the situation you may or may not have to replace most parts in a 10" radious from the bolt. With a huge amount of luck you might get away with retreading the hole.
Good luck!

I find going at an angle helps. Or just clench yer buttocks and hope nothing pings off. ;D Oh and I'd weld a big nut on. And fit some sort of guard for future avoidance. Kudos for the damage

Amen to that! My drive has a speedbump at the end of it, hit it every day, you get used to it after a while, Once Ive changed the axle bolts pictured above, Ill weld a bit of 16mm round bar between them, that'll take the majority of the impacts, and the bolts will be safe, I'm expecting more parts to break, but I'd rather that than drive around in something that looks like a range rover! Edit: if there's Kudos for slam damage, heres the silencer box from the 2cv, it should be round:

Good grief. Think I'll stick with mine looking like Bambi then! I do think this speed hump scraping is a bit silly but then a thought has just occurred to me - you're damaging speed humps. Speed humps are bad and deserve to be damaged. Excellent.

Theres nowt cooler than leaving a rooster tail of sparks behind you. Its horses for courses really Ian, I do love thrashing standard ones across muddy tracks and feilds etc, but I have one practical family vertigo wagon, so I don't mind having this one a bit lower and IMO a bit better looking!
