Firstly, I lurk on a daily basis but never seem to post anything, I do apologise..
I fit a steering wheel knob to my metro for a bit of OAP chic (like the ones of forklift trucks and the like) but I've been told that they're illegal..
true story, vaguely open to interpretation or codswallop?
cheers

I've heard the same unless you are disabled but I've never seen anything concrete to say this is true or not. Could be an urban legend.

i don't know but I'm pretty sure their not illegal. tons of trucks have them and tones of disabled people have them and you can buy them every where. i was going to get one for my old car from pound land.

that's pretty much what I've seen/heard as well. I was hoping someone would be able to prove/disprove by slapping me in the face with a piece of legislation.
I'm not disabled, I just have a fetish for beaded seat covers and tartan in Rover Metros!

I'm not all that sure about the legalities of these steering wheel knobs, but they had a bad reputation for people catching their sleeves on the knob as the wheel span back straight causing cars to veer off the road and crash in a ball of flames... ...also known as suicide knobs.

Had someone bring them up as something to use to turn the wheel quicker on a drifting forum a short while ago - quickly advised them it was a bad idea.
Note how they are only used by disabled and old people, probably because they need all the extra help they can get, don't fit one.

Just what you need in a frontal impact - all the force being concentrated on your sternum by a single point...

I've got one and I'd been told it was illegal too, was hoping this thread would finally prove one way or t'other.

Utterly useless on cars without power steering in my experience.

without power steering i imagine that it would be hard to turn at low speed, and once you are going, just 'palm' it for the same affect!

I had one in my sj410 ofroader, but i took it apart and drilled it through the flat part of the steering wheel so the rim was free of clutter and i could still let the wheel slide through my fingers with out taking any skin off. It went through two MOT's like that no problem.

I wouldn't like to say that that's that cleared up then.. but it certainly appears to be urban myth. I think it's great fun when you get used to the thing but it can be a little twitchy and unnerving to start with...
Thanks to all for the input
