My 89 900 turbo 16v has decided it cant rev past 3k. At 2.5 it starts to get lumpy -feels like its dropping cylinders -by 3k undriveable. Only option is to back off the trottle till its back below 3,000rpm, when it reverts to normal.
Its not fuel -I can load it right up at low revs and it pulls brilliantly. Turbo spools up fine -no probs of any sort -till it hits this 'brick wall'. Tickover fine, steady at 800.
I can ease the revs a little higher rolling down a steep hill -but it wont respond -just stutters. No banging through the exhaust, not able to upset it any other way.
So -does it have a limiter someplace, are the elctronics going gagga? Suggestions appreciated please

I'm not sure if it was saabs too, (mine doesnt) but iirc the rotor arm acts as a rev limiter and cuts at a certain point. could totaly wrong car but might be worth a look.

no idea on saabs.. but I know a similar problem happens with the rx7 (same age) if the ecu decides somethings not quite right.. sensor up the creek etc and sends it into limp mode.. basically stops you blowing your engine up... might be worth looking to see if there's something similar.. that's presuming the saab has one of those all seeing all knowing box of tricvks to do that with...

Rotor arms a normal one -it cant be in limp mode as it pulls like a train to 2.5k. Towed a large car 120 miles yesterday -just wouldnt accelelrate past 55mph....

Have you checked one of the little boost vacuum hoses? On one of my 9ks when the little boost pipes going to the apc detached it would do exactly as you describe.

This may be a red herring as I think the 4-pot 9000 engine is chain drive, but I had exactly those symptons on a car were the cam belt had slipped a couple of teeth.
But TBH I think it is more likely to be one of those mentioned: vacum hose or ecu sensor problem. Is there anyway to "read" the ecu?

boost/vac leak, or limp mode if the car is injected!

Yep Saabs do have a rev limiter, but the over boost usually cuts in before it. They do use limp home mode in the ecu, tick over @1500rpm and wont rev past 3000 rpm irc. They are chain drive cams. Take a look at the air mass meter on the left above the inter cooler, the wiring is atached to the body and is a tad tight onto the plug so as the engine mounts get old it tugs at the wires unil they break inside giving an intermittant contact. You will need to pull back the shroud over the plug to see it. Another one is the knock sensor, but the engine will be pinking like hell too.

I think these have LE-jet don't they? That has a basic flash fault code system using the engine check light.
Dunno how to activate it though, there's usually a connection you have to make before turning the ignition on.

OK, rev limiter is 6k. T16 models are either LH Bosch or Lucas. They have boost fuel cut, and a rev limit fuel cut.
The rev limiter is hard. The boost limiter is harder.
