righty, 2 questions have been stopping me sleeping some nights...... first one, my sierra starter motor has one cable going to it (we will ignore the thick one going to the battery)........the old escort one has 2 that go to the solenoid. how do i go about wiring these up? second Q. ignition live.....with the old coil there was 2 cables that ran to it, from what i gather, a 12v feed that powers it under cranking, and a 9v feed that powers it under normal engine running, is it correct for me to run a relay to both of these and then join the power cables coming off the relays together? also i believe that one of the cables coming off the (old) solenoid mentioned above is the 12v feed to the coil, but i'm not sure...... sorry for the lack of technical terms ;D any help would be appreciated

depends on the coil if it needs 12v or 9 volts to run normally, I dunno what your doin, putting a sierra pinto engine in an escort or somethin? sounds to me like your old escort had a live and an earth going to the (seperate?) soloniod and the sierra one probably earths through the starter.
ahh sorry just read it better, yes, one of the wires from the soloniod will be the 12v feed for the coil, so that as the soloniod is powered to crank the engine, it aslo feeds 12v to the coil, and then stops when you stop cranking so that the coil only gets 9v through the ballast resistor while the engine is running.

gone from crossflow to zetec mate.
so, heres the solution i planned. connect the 2 starter wires together, which means that it the 'spare' wire goes live under cranking (which goes to the coil)
put a relay on the 9v cable at the coil, connect the 12v cable that originally goes to the coil with the new feed that comes off the relay and use this as the 12v feed for the ECU.
really need to double check this sort of stuff as it seems pretty fiddly and i don't want things going up in flames ;D

just to add......
the reason why the wires aren't connected this way at the starter before is that the solenoid would have no resistance so it couldn't just go down to ground.......whereas I assume the new solenoid goes down to ground as theres only one cable? think that sounds about right.

All too complicated really mate, the zetec will need 12V so bin the 9v feed and forget it was ever there. The ECU should be inside the car so just run a 12V ignition feed from the switch to it, way easyer than relays and 9V ect

will that still be live under cranking?

It will be if you wire the ecu up to the right live.
Are you using EDIS? If so all you need is one 12v to the starter and one 12V to the coil.
Now you can sleep easy again ;D

not running edis mate, just an ECU that does everything in one lump, its got a plug that goes straight into the coilpack........
point out what wire i need to use to get it right from the back of the key?
