Enjoyed the Mongol Rally so much last year that me and my mate Adam have started to plan our next trip. This time it will be going France, Spain, Crossing over into Morocco and then through the Sahara desert, passing Algeria, Libya and Egypt heading east and up the red sea. Will then cross over into Turkey or Greece by ferry and then go the easern way round Europe, passing Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland and then on the home straight through France and back over to England. Something in the region of about 7500 miles and 3-4 weeks. We are not doing this through an organisation and it isn't part of a bigger rally - me and Adam (team Rusty Rhinos on the Mongol Rally) are doing it off our own back. We are looking for another team...or 2.......To come with us on this trip around Febuary 2009. So we can share the experience and have a good laugh. There will be bartering, bribes, breaking down, lack of sleep and a fair amount of off road driving and sand. No hotels and certainly no luxury (car will be your home!)...but a huge amount of fun and see loads of places. You will need a car capable of doing it...pref fairly small, old and 4X4. But tbh, we have seen all sorts of cars do off road stuff so anything will do. You will need a bit of money and the mindset to do it. We can take care of Visa applications and the other bits and bobs, as its the same work wether you do it for 2 or 10 people (Auguest is when we will start applying for some of the more complicated Visas We have another team lined up.. my mum and stepdad and they are coming in this, a 1960 Landrover Series 2 We are going in this, a 1963 Series 2a If there is anyone interested then get back to us either on the thread or by PM. Website will be live soon too so will post a link of that. Regards, Alex

Enjoyed looking at the Rusty Rhinos site when you first posted it, brilliant stuff. Good luck with this venture too! I have daydreams about taking me scooby pick up on such a trip, though a diesel would make alot more sense.. old Hilux maybe Alas.. lack of spare coin at the moment pee's on the idea

That's going to be an amazing trip. I did the Plymouth-Dakar (Banjul) challenge a few years ago (Team Dilemma Too Farr) and that was a serious challenge as it was. Going truely "unsupported" will be a proper adventure!

Sounds fantastic, been wanting to do this sort of stuff for ages. What'll the approx cost be, minus purchasing car and any breakdowns? Things like petrol, boat etc... Thanks!

Oh and an excellent choice of vehicle, if I may say!! We took a petrol LWB 2A (with overdrive). The drive down through France and Spain nearly ended a twenty year friendship - the noise and boredom was just too much, until my mate remembered he'd bought some motorcycle ear plugs (just the sort of thing you'd pack for a car trip to Africa ) - peace (literally and metaphorically) and harmony were soon restored Of COURSE it will make it! My mate regretting his decision to stop and admire the view from the top of a sand dune - the only time the LR got stuck in 4000 miles! And that included pulling other cars out TWENTY SEVEN times

As another PBC veteran I'm certainly interested, particularly if it could be done in 3 weeks And the concept of bringing the car home again appeals in a big way, but wouldn't use a Land Rover again, just tedium passing through Europe!! Thinking sierra 4x4 or similar, either that or a merc with a welded diff ;D Route looks pretty similar to these guys hem.passagen.se/saharabus/index.html Mk 1 transit anybody?

Cheers for the responses! Its difficult to say really. Fuel is a lot cheaper outside Europe by a long long way...I think when we did 8500 miles before it ended up costing maybe £300/£400 on fuel. Camping equpment and stuff isnt too expensive. There will be the odd bribe here and there no doubt. Visas are one of the main costs - probably about £300 per person for all of them. Obv there are no flights, hotels and stuff like that to pay for so considering its a month trip it is pretty cheap! The ferry crossings aren't expensive. (and there are only 2)...I will get prices on that soon. Food is a cost...but we spent about £60 in Sainsburys on stuff to take with us and hardly needed to buy anything at all while we were out last time! Food (and alcohol) is cheap outside Europe anyway) Scooby sounds like a good idea! Hilux are too but from my experience they drink more Diesel than a Land Rover! Its 7/8 months away so plenty of time to sort money But then it doesn't really matter what vehicle you take, as long as you are a happy to try bodge repairs and have a bit of determination Good stuff. If it did get close to the 3 weeks, you can always cut it short and go back the quick way so thats not much of an issue Ear plugs, brilliant! How did you find the Landie was for fuel on long distances if you don't mind me asking...did anything break? Thanks for all the pics they are superb. Thanks for the well wishes too

Yes indeed, bringing the vehicle back appeals to us too. Driving at 50MPH everywhere is all part of the challenge...you get to see a lot more of places! Mercs are good for the desert - strong cars, bigger wheels than a lot of others and decent ground clearence - apparently a fairly common site in the Sahara.

Does get me thinking about my dreams for the ultimate african road trip....old rolls royce silver shadow and a ruddy great big chevy diesel engine FTW!!! London to Cape Town in style anyone? Will take a tad more than 3 weeks though so perhaps one for a few years time.... The lack of speed I could live with if it hadn't been accompanied by the infernal rattles(I know it's a landy but it was one of the worst I've ever driven) but potentially I had too aggresive a tyre on it(mind they were free!!). Would definitely go for a lighter car, the AX in our desert group positively floated over soft sand!!

Cool pics Rolls Royce sounds a good idea Going to do the best to sort rattles on the landie, but there will always be some! Got heavy duty springs on the rear which willmake the ride somewhat worse!

whats the latest you would need to know by?...roughly speaking.... a months time, 3 months, 6 months? I assume this would hinge on the length of time taken to process the visa applications yeah?
What would be the preferred engine...diesel or petrol? discounting cost differences, I would be more concerned about availability one out of europe.
I'm interested, can rustle up a lada niva 4x4, and could maybe squeeze enough cash together. I have no team-mate though. I showed an interest in a previous organised rally and all my mates said "yeah, great idea, Id be up for it", but when it came to making a real decision, the excuses all came rolling in.

Diesel everytime, available pretty much everywhere but mainly because the quality doesn't vary quite as much as petrol..

Wakster: good stuff Dave: Well, we will be putting in the first Visa applications in August, so about 3 months. At a push it could wait a little while longer than that. Both our cars at the moment are petrol...but tbh doesn't make much difference to us. As ironmighty says, the quality if diesel stays about the same...but then if you have a Land Rover or old Lada that isn't an issue anyway, they will run on anything (old Ladas and old SJs I know from first hand experience will run on 76RON). Usually where there is Diesel there is Petrol, is that a right assumption ironmighty? Yeah I can imagine getting a team mate could be difficult. You don't *need* a team mate in theory as we will be travelling as a mini-convoy for a lot of it...but you will get very bored, lonely and tired driving on your own. How about a few people on here that think they might be able to scrimp together enough for the fuel, car etc on here team up?

I've always fancied doing this sort of thing as a "once in a lifetime" sort of a deal. I reckon I could rustle up a series Landie from somewhere, although no doubt there are more suitable vehicles about Like pretty much everyone else though, I fancy the idea but can't be sure I'd have the time/money. Still, at least we're all honest about that here

Firstly with regards to fuel there were enough fuel stations carrying both to ensure that petrol or diesel were covered, although sometime you can find diesel in really isolated spots.
Key thing with anywhere on a overseas roadtrip is to be aware of what risks you might face, and respect local culture and normally you'll receive a warm welcome. Behave like idiots and you'll get problems you richly deserve!
Not sure if you'd need Carnet de Passage for Libya and Egypt though thinking about, will have a look at that and get back to you.
