it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

For general folding I usually use a combination of a vice, various lengths of thick angle iron, molegrips, pieces of wood and a hammer.
Making things fit in situ as you are doing is quite difficult without heating it. When its cold you need to bend the metal past the position it needs to be so that it returns to the position you want. Obviosuly as the floor is there it can't bend sufficiently. What you could do is use the handle of a hammer to push down on the metal then tack it. Once it is held down with a few tacks you'll be able to hammer the rest to match the floor.

Blimey there's a forum for everything these days! cheers for that. And cheers Matt, you've just reminded me i have shares in a metal folder which i temporarily forgot. that shape up there, I thought was going to be a lot more simple, but surprising how many bends and stuff it needed. on the case, that's bulkhead work there, and when its looking ugly I think will it ever be show condition again after these fixes, so will take care-to be careful and tidy best of my abilitiez.

Can I recommend making it in card first as well, then simply transfer to the steel.

get a proper hammer and dolly kit. Sandbags can be handy, but ive got by with rolled up doormats etc in the past. As already said, start with card and then transfer to metal. Get the shape as close as possible as you can do. If you can get it close, it can be pushed flush and be tacked in. I wouldnt tack half in, and then beat the rest of the panel in situ, it often leads to a fairly poor finish. And most of all, take your time. The more attention you spend on it, the better result you'll get

Thanks for solid decent replies! I'm on the right track at least, I did use card but obv not properly! it was the wobbly kind, I destroyed all the shreddies boxes last time! what messed it up it seems is the costant mods to get the hole right with the outer shape and that being 3D and not as flat as i thought originally. TBH its not bad, but i might well "rip it up n start again" tomorrow, i'm not over practiced but I have an idea what finish i want and careful not to trap any rust spots (like Ford did ) I'm defo in the mood for it, current bun is helping aswell. Ace fixes Cheeqi, you've set the bench mark I'll try chase "a proper hammer and dolly kit" thanks K, in the meantime I'll stop being blonde and take shatmepants' suggestion to smooth my inherited hammers. why didn't I think of that! Warm thanks retro riders, I'll be back soon enough with results once I'm happy with teh progress. Peace

you don't need any fancy dollies or hammers to do panel work. What you need is a proper understanding of how steel behaves when you hit it. If your hammers are marked ,buy a smooth curse word file or mill file and smooth the face . keep it smooth . A flat face is used for streching the steel ,making it thinner, and rounded face is used for shrinking, making the steel gather and become thicker. I wont go into how that is done but i can promise you that you can buy any old tat at a flea market and smooth and shape the faces to suit your needs as you learn to bend steel .
I have several hammers and dollies which I have bought on Ebay saving myself a heap of cash. But I also make dollies and slappers to suit jobs. Also, one of neighbours is a very busy smash repair place and they go through dozens of door skins ,roofs and so in a week so when I want some quality precoated steel I just help my self to a door skin or two I just scored the almost new roof from a toyota bus,I won't be buying steel for a while... ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
