Esp 2.2 Estates circa 1993... ;D

Learnt to drive in the 1800 Pick-up all those years ago, but a lot has gone on since then

Nice cars, look the part, cheap as chips now and the 2.0 Turbo is the ultimate q-car as it goes like a rocket

My brother in law has the J import twin turbo GT estate version, doesn't use it anymore so might be for sale soon.

Think it's about 280bhp, goes very well but hasn't been the most reliable thing, to be honest probably just needs an enthusiastic owner to look after it. They are rather complicated under the bonnet to say the least!

He had the 2.2 estate before that one, that also went well up to about 190k miles when he gave up with it and bought the turbo one.

Why did he give it up? THe one I'm looking at has 160k on the clock and seems to be a peach. Will I be looking at trouble with it in about 30k?

Also, what's the mpg like on it?

The Pakers website say the MPG is 29.
Make sure the cambelt has been done, If i remember rightly is a big belt because of the 4cam engine and the belt alone is expensive (£50+) and thats even before you paid to get it fitted (unless you can do i yourself).

I don't think the Legacy EJ22 of the 90s was quad cam, but I might be wrong.

They sound amazing when you free up the breathing and exhaust, I've not long finished helping a mate put an EJ25D in the back of his T25 crewcab and it sounds like a supercar at high revs.

i got the 2.0 turbo estate... bought it on 105K now on 145K only the altenator has gone wrong since i bought it. other than general servicing costs. don't mention the economy word to mine though, it gets upset. runs on super for good measure. but certainly puts a grin on my face when turbo eventually kicks in.

would recommend them, not a lot of people know what they are. had an argument with an subaru rally jacketted anorak imprezza owner who laughed at it and wanted to know why i put a bonnet scoop, subaru and turbo badges on a nissan...! daft tw*t! had the last laugh though as his imprezza was tarted up like a WRX with shopping list down the drivers door, vast array of plastic appendages... but it was only a plain 2.0 non-turbo.

The one I'm looking at id a K-plate 2.2 N/A jobby. Not the prettiest or most retro of motors, but would make a good parts chaser/towcar and maybe be slightly more sensible than the Senator. I just don't know a lot about them and am trying to find out.

No, wasn't anything to do with the mileage, still ran fine although it used a bit of water due to a possible HG issue on one side of the engine I think. He gave up with that one 'cos the turbo one came along that's all, was still in decent running order if a bit tatty.

2.2 should be the quad cam 16valve. very torquey, perfect for towing. the last owner of mine used to tow horseboxes and I tow a trailer with nova on it no problems...

early classic imprezas use the legacy chassis so many of the engine, drive train parts and suspension are interchangeable. second hand parts are dead cheap legacies aren't worth much so there are plenty in scrappies, and tons of imprezas crashed by numpties to pillage for upgrade parts. www.uklegacy.com has a wealth of info in case you need it... even guides to locating and changing the spark plugs.... not the easiest of tasks.

import ones are expensive to insure, high spec have air con which is handy. they do get bitten by the rust bug though... check around windscreen...and usual places, sills etc. mac struts all round so easy to chop springs.

looks pretty good in blue. i hate the colour of mine. but it took 2yrs of searching to find one as good as mine. although the body condition isn't great the car has been kept up regardless of cost, i got a main dealer service reciept in the service history a month before i bought it for nearly £2k! inc new clutch.

some silver wrx wheels would look good on that, and a bit of lowering, standard ones ride real high.

would love to lower mine some more but can't really because the trailer rides level at the moment, and i need to use it off road.

It's not a bad colour. Not so sure about the blue seats, dashboard, steering wheel etc though!

Had a quick look round it and it seems well. Couple of blebs but doesn't seem to be anything major. Not sure it is a quad cam, wouldn't like to say 100% though.

If I got it it'd be treated to some wheels to get rid of those hideous things it's got now. Don't know about lowering for the same reasons as yourself - towing and it'll be a workhorse.

I've had this shape and the later shape. The later was a much better car in my experience. Leather, AC, nicer colour. The early car had troublesome air suspension which went wrong and was very expensive to repair and gave a horrid ride

Make sure you buy one with coil springs!

I've never seen one with air suspension... sounds complicatedly-expensive!

easy to tell if it's quad cam, i should think it is, i think the 1.8 povo spec was dual cam, see pic below (ignore no expense spared parts washer) the three black parts to the bottom and right of the pic are the cam covers. the four dimples to the bits on the right indicate the centre of the cams. if you look at the engine these bits should be right at the front of the engine.



curse word pic of mine below with its last set of wheels... bought these off peebay purely for the almost new tyres. wheels looked nasty and turned out to be more square than round. was looking for silver rims but the gold ones came up locally on peebay and were dead cheap.

I had one too. Good cars.
Mine was a '93 2.0 Turbo - I bought it with 145K on the clock and had budgeted an engine rebuild because of the mileage. Never happened though. Drove it for 3 years only fails were a couple of CV rubber boots, an alternator, a radiator (cracke plastic bit) and a water pump. Towed a rally car around on a trailer a lot of week-ends during that time.

Sold it with 227K on the clock and it was still going strong. Averaged 29mpg on a long trip too.

Parts can be a bit expensive though - might be cheaper now they are older.
