I cant see anything wrong with the towcar. I went in a member on heres one the other day and thought it was really nice for a modern car. I have to say i hated them when they first came out, but they have grown on me. Not scared not to copy every other manufacturer out there. As for trailers ive sold mine as I'm going back to a roofrack. Ive found some roof bags for ÂŁ25 locally that are fantastic, and fold flat when not in use.

CAR-B-Qs... A friend from Kent VW is rolling with this: Still unfinished, needs kitchen cabinets and lowering etc. Its awesome... I wanna do a similar one but have it as a bed. Like... a mk2 golf shell but chopped like the passat above, with a bed in it Perfect for RR and E38 next year

WOW! that audi trailer is basically the best thing i've ever seen. i've got a spare escort shell knocking about thats good for nothing other than soemthing like this! cut everything after the front doors off, matching set of BBS splits and paintjob, basically the best thing ever in the world ever. watch this space ;D. what would be the rules regarding said trailer? if memory serves me well it needs to be less than the length of the car that your towing, which will be science proven fact as its the same car with the front cut off.
such a win idea

I think the law states something like half the kerb wieght of the towing vehicle. I don't think you'd want to be running too much wieght in that audi anyway ;D

There is an 85% rule in this country, but in other countries that isnt so. A daihatsu Fourtrack can tow 3 times its bodyweight, but in this country its still limited to the 85% rule. When you see Land rovers range rovers etc towing big heavy things in this country they are breaking the law, even though they can physically do it easily. Its real stupid

Land Rover 88/90/109/110 + Defenders are exempt IIRC, something due to their MOD status. don't quote me on that though.

The 85% thing isnt a rule, its a recomendation, and only really applies to braked trailers.
The law is that an unbraked trailer has to weight less than 750kgs gross or whatever the towcar is rated to tow unbraked, whichever is lower. If you cut up the back of a car, the original brakes arent acceptable as trailer brakes as they are less than 50% efficient. You either need to have it unbraked or change the hubs over to trailer hubs with proper brakes, plus fit an over-run damper coupling etc. Expensive.
If a trailer is braked, you can tow whatever weight your towcar is rated to tow. My vectra is rated to tow about 1600kgs iirc, whereas a defender will tow 3500kgs The caravan club recommend that the trailer weighs 85% or less than the weight of the towcar for novices. Experienced people can go up to 100% of the towcar weight, and only have the trailer heavier than the towcar if you really know what you are doing.
All this is subject to your drivers licence restrictions if you passed your test fairly recently.
As for the Passat trailer above, I would say that although undoubtably cool, its probably horrific to tow and possibly quite unsafe. Having the trailer axle so far rearwards means that the noseweight of the trailer will be very high. Most UK towbars only have a noseweight load rating of 75kgs or so. Even when empty, any trailer designed like that will be over this, never mind with a load in it. Plus, the length of the front overhang coupled to the low ground clearance will make it very likely to bottom out and ground itself on even the smallest of humps or uneven road surfaces.

you've gotta love trailers........... I just made this last weekend - bit unusual as it only has one wheel and I'm about to start on this one.......... (number 37 from the book, '101 Things to do with an old Mini') My cunning plan is for a built in gas BBQ and beer fridge in it

I regularly tow 16ft car trailers with cars although i suspect i am doing so illegally.
Apparently, if you are towing a braked trailer with a gross weight of 2500kgs, if this plus the gross unladen weight of the towcar is greater than the combination towing weight then it is illegal, even if the actual weight is less.
Most of my cars have a combination towing weight of around 3600-3700kgs. The trailer i usually use is rated at 2500kgs. The car weighs around 1550kgs unladen. This means that with a fully laden trailer, i'm towing around 4200kgs!!! I'm not sure what the trailer actually weighs, around a ton i would have thought, it's fairly substantial.
I would have thought that roof racks would be fairly popular these days, given that a newly passed driver cannot tow a trailer without passing a seperate test. Not sure when the cut off date is, 01/01/97 rings a bell. I'm sure its the same date where you also cannot drive a 7.5 ton truck either.
