The rotted to hell Allegro I bought last friday yeilded a low mileage 1300 engine and box which I gas axed out. Unfortunately the Allegro it came out of didnt have a bonnet and had been outside for many years with the result the engine had been thouroughly weathered. The carb was full of water, along with number 2 cylinder. Ive drained the water out through the spark plug hole and filled each cylinder with diesel. The oil I drained out of the sump/gearbox was a horrible emulsified browny colour showing the amount of water that had got inside,it was more oil than water though! Am I wasting my time attempting to free off the engine? Even if I manage to free off the seized pistons will the engine need a full rebuild? If the engine is deemed scrap what is likely to be reusable? I'm hoping the head and box might see the road again. Anybody got any experience or advice on seized engines?

water in the bores means corrosion if its been left a while, if you freed it off could end in piston and or ring damage, id have the head off to inspect, or weigh it in

If the oiston is rusted in, it's junk unless you strip it and get it re bored. The head and gearbox should be salvagable without too much trouble though

Thought so.. I only removed it because someone wanted a block to rebore. I was just curious as to wether it could be freed off. It seemed far too much trouble for an engine thats been out in the open for so long! Be great if he can revive it though.
I'm also looking into buying a cheapo allegro with a chewed valve. The head from this lump would be an ideal replacement, if its usable!

by that do you mean you are actively looking for an allegro with a scrap valve just so you can use that head? or you know of one that you can put that head on? be funny if your going out of your way to find a whole car with a nackerd head just to replace it

If there's been water in it for any length of time (which from the look of it it has) the bores will be trashed. Head might clean up and you might get lucky and the box might be ok as well. I bought a 1098 lump for the remote box that had blatantly been outside uncovered for ages, although the seller insisted it hadn't It was buttons so as I only wanted the box I took a chance. The block was trashed, pits 2-3mm deep in places but the solid skirt pistons will live on in one of BnDs projects. Head (a gasflowed 12g295) cleaned up well too, but the valves are too pitted to use. Turned out it had a Kent cam in it as well (still in good nick), so someone had lavished time and cash on it before it got used for a garden ornament Didn't even use the 'box in the end as it was worn out, but there was no water damage in it that I found.

Ill pull the head off as soon as I get chance, along with the box. The engine itself is off to get reconditioned by a member of the Allegro club!
Ive just had to hide it in my garden, It was on the drive but I had a note pushed in the top from a scrap dealer asking if I wanted it taking away... No thanks!
I had a scrap dealer offer to buy the scrap allegro when it was on the trailer, loaded with scrap and blatantly off to be weighed in. What the hell did he think I ws doing with it?
