I had port-a-walls on my galant for a while. I think they look heaps better then painting them on but you can run into issuse with the side wall of the tyre. New tyres have weaker side walls (or so i'm told) and port-a-walls can make the tyre slip of the rim! This would happen when the tyre is flexing when cornering. I got rid of mine when my mum moved my car from the drive to the street and I watched her drag the rims down the curb back up and do it again! the wile walls were shot, they had big bits missing out of them and I was a little intoxicated off. I had just spent $200aud and they got ripped only 2 months after putting them on. Any way they go curb easy and with bits missing they can create vibration from the unbalanced load. I'm going to put some thin stripes of my tires when the weather gets better. I want to see how long they last. Heres a shot of my port-a-walls. EDIT: oh ye i got them from ebay. cheers

That looks sweet!!....is he the guy who does it for Bay Are Rods in Poole, 'cos they have a guy who does it for them for around the same price. I've used Atlas trims on my bug with no problems whatsoever. You just have to use a little rubber grease behind them so they don't damage the tyre wall. As for curbing, you have to be careful no matter what kind of whitewall you have. I had real crossply whitewalls on the bug a few years ago which cost £130 per tyre and any curb-touching would mark them badly. You just have to be more careful if you have whitewalls - always park driver's side next to the curb!

I wanted mine painted, but no one around here does them Also, ben told the tyres have to hav covered some miles due to the oils in the discolouring the whitewall. I run atlas trims and they've been fine,we did fit them properly tho. Be very very careful if you get those around curbs,if you hit one it rips bits off and throws them everywhere.Broke my bloody mirror! If you want the Atlas ones,my mate Mark from fiftysixdelux.co.uk does them

I curbed one on the bug once and eventually it came off whilst I was doing 70mph on the M3! Made a hell of a racket as it hit the underside of the front wing then went under the car!

Yep,never fun!Had one fly off at about 80 odd and fly off behind me on a dual carraigeway. I hasten to add they failed due to my own pants driving, not because they're bad quality. They're definately not

You can get them in sizes 10" upwards. I've got a set of 13" whiteband flaps waiting to go on the Alpine. I got mine from Bravado Automotive who advertise in Practical Classics (among other places). They do flaps as whitewalls, whitebands, redbands and I think orange or yellow bands. You can also get extra wide whitewall flaps, although they recommend these only for crossplies!

That beetle is stunning!!Nice work my friend The Beetle was stunning....unfortunately it's fallen on hard times recently, viz. a lack of cash and interest. Hasn't be used for well over a year and it's got some nasty rust appearing....

Ive also spoken to Neil at the tyre whitewalling service in Manchester. He understandably doesnt want to travel a long way just to do one set of tyres. I'm very keen to have my woody tyres white-banded and I'm in Essex. Is there enough of us within the south east to all meet up and get Neil to come down and do them all at the same time thus making it worthwhile for him???

I'd be interested too if I can't get in contact with the guy on the south coast.....trouble is, I've gotta get a new set of tyres first as my present ones aren't a matching set and are too wide for the wheels, and put 500 miles on the new set, as from memoery I think that's necessary before they can be whitewalled.
