A few years ago I bought this cool van as a non-runner. I fixed the engine and we have enjoyed this alternative thing on many occasions. We still love our van and I thought I might be able to inspire some adventures for some of you!
My girlfriend and I live in Surrey between London and Brighton. We were invited to a friend's wedding in Aberdeen, Scotland. We also wanted to go wild camping in Scotland in our van so a couple of weeks ago we packed the van and stared driving north!
The wedding was great and the day after we continued north. We camped by Loch Ness the first night, just in a layby on the quieter southern road.
Not a bad view from the van eh?
We have tailor-made curtains and mattresses to cover the folded-down seats. I have also fitted a heater that runs of the diesel so we were toasty warm too
Next, we headed to the very north coast of Scotland to Tongue and found a perfect location right by the sea. 4WD came in useful to get there
Then over to Durness, the most northerly village in the UK pretty much. It's a buzzing little place with two pubs a couple of shops and loads to do and see
We then headed down the west coast to Fort William and Glencoe amongst others
Ben Nevis
The 4WD is very useful for clambering onto rocks to level things up!
So we spent nearly two weeks travelling in our van. We covered nearly 1900 miles in that time at an average of 43mph, max 71mph and cruising at around 65mph
We've used our van fairly hard for a few years and still really enjoy it. We see it as a classic to rival the VW vans. Ours now needs some TLC though which it will receive. The list stands at:
Windscreen
LH mirror
Radiator rebuild
AC compressor (can't find one)
Central locking (locking failed this week)
New front wing (got, need to fit)
New tailgate (rusty)
New exhaust (rusty)
Reverse light bulb
Side light bulb
MOT
Apart from that, we're really happy with our machine. I thoroughly recommend the north and west coast of Scotland. It's well worth the trip to the north and if you do, make sure you visit Cape Wrath too!
