this is very cool!! could you use a van style hook hinge on the lower part of the tailgate slipt? it would open out and round the light and when shut would have a slightly nicer line? not ment to be as fussy sounding as it is! haha it would just finish it off nicely, unless thats already what you have done? hard to tel from pics
all in all love the car...van...can? the quad lamps with the bonnet mods suit it really well, the wheels are great and the slightly ratty paint looks perfect!

Those hinges were a complete paint to get right. 1st hinge used was from a Sherpa van because had a good sweep but it looked a bit Heath Robinson so it was back to the drawing board as I wanted this to look factory. The hinges used in the end thanks to my good mate Nick were from his Cherokee welded to another set of unknown hinges and all shortened to fit behind the inner rear light so from the inside you see nothing. Hinges bolt to the gate so it's adjustable. I will let some pics do the talking

Presumabley this doesn't need the dreaded BIVA test because you've not chopped the bodyshell...
I quite like what you've done, it's smart and in keeping with the lines of the car, makes a good looking van. How complicated is splitting the tailgate so it opens and shuts properly? I've been thinking of doing it with mine but having it hinged top and bottom rather than top and side as you've done.

I've been thinking of doing it with mine but having it hinged top and bottom rather than top and side as you've done. Hi had the cat inspected by VOSA and it's now classed as a van just to avoid confusion if the police run a check on the van. When I first wanted to split the tailgate I wanted to to make the bottom half go downwards but after seeing another one that had been done it dose not work on a Passat due to the fact the tailgate is rounded so you would either have to have it raised or the bumper reshaped. On a MK2, 3 Polo or golf you would be ok as the tailgates are flat so they should work and be a lot easier to do except for losing the the line where you cut, on the B3 Passat it's there for you. One way out of this is to cut the tailgate below the rear window so that the window opens with the top half of the hatch. Mines not finished yet, still needs a weather seal and general tidying up which will be done when the car is finally painted. Top half of my hatch opens from the original lock turned upside down and the bottom gate can be opened when the top hatch is opened using Honda Civic latches as early Civic have split tailgates. At the moment I'm using both of the gas struts to hold the top half open but i only really need one, the advantage of two is that you can put a bungee cord from the bottom gate to the hatch and it will stay open in place when driving, this is just temporary, also need to put a check strap on the lower. Also I have made the exhaust side exit to avoid fumes being drawn in to the car and thats made a difference, but do need to sort a seal out

late 80's early 90 Civic where split with the bottom half going downwards and there's plenty of them in the scrap yards, I had a choice of two when i got mine.
Mine would have been a lot easier if i had also got rid of the lights from the tailgate as it's the lights that stop it from opening all the way but i wanted to keep it factory.
Can't take all the credit for doing this as most of it was done by my good mate Nick who's known as Nick In The Barn. Most of the stuff i do is done in the back service way where i live and it's amazing how i have not had any complaints from neighbours and passers by as I spend a lot of time out there welding / grinding etc. Have to give the more time consuming stuff to Nick as it's not practical doing it outside in the street more or less

I was thinking of making the split where you said, I've got a colour split there anyway so it the shut line would disappear, mostly. I'll see if I can get to a scrapyard in the next few months and have a nose about, you've made it sound much more straightforward now that I know there's a suitable donor vehicle for what I want to do. Good call on the exhaust too, I wouldn't have thought about that. Thank you for the info I shall continue keeping an eye on this thread to see what happens.

Cor, this shot brings back memories I used to walk the dog down that alley next to the house at the end and I lived in the terrace you can see in the distance..... Is the manky Datsun 280Z still dumped in the alley? Crackin' job you are doing there, certainly a different way of hanging a tailgate.

Hello mate, we met at Bug Jam (I'm Nicks mate, the commentator bloke with the B4) love the updates on this, that tailgate is inspired... Really like it. Looks great on the Keskins too. Being creative and getting stuck can yield great results ;D

Hi Bryn i remember meeting you, hows things?
Vans coming along well, going to fit a B4 rear bumper as it's a lot smoother tomorrow weather permitting after work, also got a pair of second hand wings that I'm playing about with to make the front arches blend in better and then it maybe a proper spray job, don't do it now i never will as will never find the money to do it as I'm about to become a dad in December.

Going to be a dad again in December so I have decided it's time to stop messing a round and get the thing proporly painted, if i don't get done now it will never be done. Since last update i have fitted a B4 rear bumper then took it off as i felt the original bumper fitted in with the car better, did delete the hole for the towbar and exhaust first Also fitted another pair of wings with the wheel arched extended further down Now playing with a bay window camper dash, amazingly although the camper van dash is wider the curve that fits around the windscreen is identical [img src="http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p87/mocco7/DSC00555.jpg[/I i126.photobucket.com/albums/p87/mocco7/DSC00562.jpg"] MG]

Just keeps looking better. Cheers dude all encouragement helps. The dash is a bit of a wild card (but you and me like that sort of thing) I have measured every thing but i realy need to remove the original dash and have trial fit before i know it's going to work and i can't do that until the end of November when the tax runs out and it comes of the road for a make over

Experiment is the mother of creation... or something. I think you've done pretty well taking risks so far, worst case scenario is that you'll just have to put the original dash back in. Having said that, putting a steel one in will really make the van stand out that bit more, but where to stop? Column change and bench seats would be tempting me if I were putting a metal dash in your van, but I suspect that would be a lot of work.
