This might be a silly Queston but ill still ask. why is it that on these old drag race cars the driver was sitting behind/over the rear diff of the car? nice looking at these old pictures brings back memorys when we used to go to watch the East african safari rally, and used the old film cameras to take pictures trying not to waste the shots. taking pictures and realising that you missed the car when you get them processed. so much easier these days....

The driver sitting over/behind the axle was about weight distribution. However a lot of people got hurt when gearboxes/axles exploded.
When tyres were still rubbish (re-capped slicks) they used to spin the wheels the whole length of the track, which reduced the stress on the drivetrain. However when sticky tyres were introduced they started blowing stuff up (with obvious consequences when your CROWN jewels are over the diff casing). Gearbox/axle technology was way behind on development, therefore they again had to set the cars up to spin the wheels to reduce the stresses.
IIRC Don Garlits built the first successful rear engined dragster, after a clutch explodion on a FED blew part of his foot off.

The Bucket T in the background has a Daimler Hemi like that in Pieces of Eight. I wonder if there is an obvious way to tell if a Daimler Hemi is a 2.5L or a 4.5L version? Bore spacing on both is the same. Used the same heads, did they also? HW, like those shoes? ;D There's a lot of ennui going on in this picture. Oh well..... Sigh..... Such is life..... Merrily, merrily.....
