avoid chinese no-makes, buy speedglas if you can afford it.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I have one, and was so impressed, my brother in law asked me to get him one too. Both came from ebay, one from china one from usa and boh around £30 all in. Mine included a great set of leather gauntlets too. Yeah, I'm sure there are better ones, but its fine for me and such a massive improvement over the old fixed mask.

I've got an old Translight and these look identical to my old model so I'm guessing it's the same but with no brand. It's fine for occasional welding but a bit uncomfortable to use every day because the reaction is a bit slow. Depends what you want it for... personally I'd only buy a mask over £100 from Jackson, Speedglas etc with a fast reaction.

I am going to get one soon. I don't really understand them, do they adjust on lighting conditions to give maximum visibility or are they just an on and off affair?

just on and off really, although the darkness is usually adjustable.
No, sorry, I don't remember the names, it was a few years back.

I bought one of These helmets off the bay a while ago It's OK but not brilliant (wasn't expecting wonders for the price) - quite a narrow viewing area, not that quick to respond and sometimes doesn't un-darken It does me fine though as I'm only using it occasionally and it does look cool

machine mart, £70ish quid, i've got one, nice and big viewing area, loads of adjustable (from the outside too) sealey i think, i'd not trust the cheap stuff, my eyesight is worth spending the extra £40 ;D

Is it easier to weld with these compared to a normal mask? I have a Sealey Mask with a #10 graded glass. Whilst I have no problem whilst the welding is going on, trying to start off is fun.

Yes they are far better for exactly what you mention, starting off in the right place and not having to 'hunt' around for that elusive gap your trying to fill

appreciate the comments on eye saftey with the cheaper ones
to be fair i hardley ever use the welder , and I'm so curse word at welding i end up sheilding the weld with my glove or looking away etc
i think even a cheaper one would be safer than how i get along now lol
any ideas on the grade glass needed for mig welding?

An adjustable one for MIG will go between 9-13 normally I think E.g. I got a 'SIF lite' for £35 from a bay shop, normally £55 or more I think. Much better than the old fixed shade one. It may not be super top quality but it's not no-name Chinese either, and plenty good enough for a 'umble chimp like me.

Fixed shade ones are usually shade 11 which is a good all round shade, adjustable ones are 9-13 like Robert le Poisson said

I've been using a cheap Ebay adjustable one (with the free gauntlets) for a couple of years now. I paid £24.99 IIRC. It's certainly worth the money, but it's getting long in the tooth now. I've had hundreds of hours of use from it with the only problem being the head strap adjustment breaking. Still useable though.
I'm going for one of the skull ones next!

i couldn't live without mine for TIG stuff, in fact, because both hands are doing things, you've not got a spare to drop the mask down.

I would avoid the Chinese helmets... The Made-in-USA helmets are made by a company called "Jackson", and they're demonstrably quicker acting and thus better for your eyes. I have a modestly-priced model, and my only complaint is that I do need to keep extra batteries around for it because when the batteries start going weak the mask will auto-darken under the (60Hz flickering) florescent lights in my garage.
