its not a mk2 is it?
please do not curse word up the sump on a mk2 (or mk1 for that matter)
i rounded the thread on mine, and had to remove the engine, lower the xmember and steering, and it was off the road for about 2 weeks, just to remove the sump!

No, it's a Mk3. Plan now is to take it to Kwikfit and blame them ;D.
I'll probably end up welding a big f*ck-off nut on it and spannering it off.

Very common Escort problem. You can usually loosen them with the aid of a hammer and chisel by carefully hitting the outside bitty of the plug. It doesn't usually need much persuasion to slacken it enough to use Vice Grips on it to remove it.

Thanks chaps. I was gonna leave it til tomorrow but when things go t*ts up I'm like a dog with a bone... I just have to finish it. Buzzed a nut on there and hey presto, it's off. Now I gotta walk to the Ford stealership round the corner to get a new sump plug! Bloody nightmare - 3 cars and none of them work! At least I won't have to take it to Kwik-Sh!ts - I figured they'd only be able to do what I can do to get the bung out, so I might as well do it. Mig welding upside-down is no fun at all though
